The backup files don’t seem to work

  • Unknown's avatar

My website’d been compromised. I tried restoring it with 2 backups but it still looks dead/empty. Should I give up and make a new site from scratch or hire someone to fix it?
I’ve been talking to my domain/hosting support and they said it looks like the backup files miss more files.

The domain system files are restored so there are no longer viruses. Thought the problem could be the fact that wp.com has a paid plan now and I still use the free one so maybe the website doesn’t work because I don’t have access to the plugins since they’re no longer available in the free plan.

  • Hi there!

I’m sorry to hear your site has been compromised :( I can see there’s some confusion about WordPress.com and WordPress.org, so let me first clarify that.

We, WordPress.com, are a cloud-based platform where we manage WordPress sites, whereas WordPress.org is stand-alone software that you can download and self-host with any other hosting.

You can find more details about WordPress.com and WordPress.org on this page:

    https://wordpress.com/go/website-building/wordpress-com-vs-wordpress-org/.

That said, it doesn’t look like your site is hosted on WordPress.com, so the fact that you have a free plan site here, wouldn’t affect phsounds.com in any way.

Now, we can’t help in restoring your original site, sadly, as it’s hosted elsewhere, but if you decide to create your site from scratch on our platform, we are here to answer any questions you may have. On WordPress.com we treat security very seriously:

    https://wordpress.com/support/security/

    https://wordpress.com/support/malware-and-site-security/

If you’d rather keep trying to rebuild your original site, you may try asking for help at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/, maybe someone has any suggestions on how to fix the import files.
