The best book for WordPress beginners

  I’m about to rebuild my wifes online retail ecom site using a purchased theme in wordpress and I would like to have a hard copy book as reference while I customise it and add in the various plugs for buying on line. I realise there arew online resources such as codex but I would like the book beside me. I find there’s a maze of books available but while one reviewer says a particular book is suitable for people who dont know code, another reviewer will report the direct opposite about the same book. Is there one that covers the topic well and guides the user through the processs of changing a theme to suit?

  Well, you can’t really do ecommerce on WordPress.com. The shopping cart code is stripped out here for security reasons. As well, selling items you yourself do not design and manufacture is not allowed by the Terms of Service.

  I think you would be much, much better off with a WordPress.ORG blog with paid hosting. You can then easily incorporate ecommerce into the site and use plugins for newsletters and so on to make things easy for your customers and yourself.

  Given that, the BEST book out there is WordPress for Dummies. It explains both kinds of WP: .org and .com. As well, there are excellent tutorials on Lynda.com if you like video tutorials.

  Thank you for your quick reply. I already have hosted website and I intend to use a purchased theme through Theme Forest which I can customise with woo commerce plug in to replace the existing site. I had read that WordPress for Dummies was not designed for people with no coding experience. I have got the Lynda tutorial but I like to have a hard copy book as well. Have you used WordPress for Dummies?

  I have not but I know the guy who does the Lynda tutorials and I know Matt who invented WordPress and they both like the book. When my sister wanted a WP book that was the one she bought on the recommendation of the people at the bookstore where she works. Apparently it doesn’t get returned much.

  I used for Dummies when I was starting out – helped quite a bit – no coding experience required
