The Big Brother Theme – Inconsistent Typography
-
I’m not really sure whether this topic belongs here or to the Translations forum. A while back I had some problems with The Big Brother’s Polish localization, so I helped push it to 100%. In the process some other issues came up, and this one remains both unresolved and rather frustrating.
The Big Brother theme, while otherwise very good, displays Polish characters wrong. They clearly come from different fonts, and it’s pretty visible. Some examples of what I mean:

https://wirtualnesesje.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/font-1.png
https://wirtualnesesje.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/font-2.pngWith Open Sans font Polish characters are visibly thinner. They either come from different font or they are not bolded properly. Post titles look ugly as a results.
With Gentium font Polish characters are visibly larger and heavier. It probably defaults to some other font, as I was told Gentium doesn’t feature Polish characters at all. It’s particularly visible with itilicized text, since those characters are not italicized at all. However, even with normal text sometimes every second word in my posts looks wrong.
It seems special Polish characters that are common with other languages, like French, display properly.
GlotPress has some font options for cases like this, and I tried changing them to “off” for both fonts, but apparently the validator doesn’t think it’s a good idea. I’m not sure if this would have solved the issue in the first place, but it seemed worth a try.

Adding latin-ext subset and (for Open Sans in particular) changing font from .woff to .ttf supposedly helps. However, those suggestions come from wordpress.org community and here I have no means of fixing this on my own.
I would really appreciate some help with this issue.

Hi Filip! I see what you mean. The Big Brother theme uses Google Fonts, and it looks like certain character subsets are not being imported properly for Open Sans and Gentium. I’ll let our developers know about this issue, to see if we can get it resolved.
Thanks for the report! I’ll let you know as soon as I have additional information.

Howdy! Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We’ve made a fix to Big Brother that should ensure your text looks consistent. :)
Cheers,

Thanks!
Post titles are good now.
The issue with Gentium seems partially solved. Polish characters are now italicized properly, but they are still visibly larger and heavier. However, I’m not sure if this can be fixed at all with Gentium font. Any ideas?

Hi @filipluszczyk!
If it’s true that Gentium doesn’t contain all the Polish characters you need (you can see what’s supported here: http://www.google.com/fonts/specimen/Gentium+Basic), turning that font “off” in the Polish language translation is definitely the best option. I don’t know if you have a way to convey that to the validators, but you can point them to this thread if it’s still a problem.
Cheers,

As far as I know GlotPress doesn’t have any discussion space.
It’s over here. :)

If you post your thread link here once you’re done, I can try to make sure someone sees it.
