The block picker
-
Sorry, I don’t recall the actual name, but I mean the popup block menu after you press +.
Is this and the editor standard and universal among themes?
Or does it vary from theme to them?I ask as I am 98% certain that back in June when I chose that menu I had a scrollable option.
But now, using a different them, it gives me 2 lines, 6 choices I think then I need to click again to go to another menu.
Also, I am sure back in June the most used t blocks were listed first. Now not so?
Is this something I am doing, is my set up wrong?
Before it was really convenient, but now it is as if person A said how can we make our theme different? Then person B suggests changing the theme so an extra step is needed to get the same result in the block editor.
Anything that sticks an extra hurdle in front of the user is not a good UX.
I understand in the scheme of things this is a petty, unimportant question, but it really frustrates the heck out of me each time I have to go through the process.
I thought the original was fine- if it aint broke, why fix it?Also, miles off topic, but why do I see this message each time I log in here?

Hi there!
The editor is the same for all sites, regardless of the theme you’re using.
We’re constantly improving things though so it’s possible that you remember something from a previous version. To add a new block you can either click the + sign directly in the body of the post/page, or you can click it on the top left, that’s where you’ll see all the available options:

Hi there back.
Thanks for confirming re themes- I guessed they should be but….Innovation, improvement is great, but sometimes the existing set up is best. If it aint broken….. Personally, and I admit I am likely out of step with millions of others, but for me, the original call and deploy of the block menu was exemplary. This improvement just adds an extra step.
Again, maybe I am doing it wrong- but once I type a para I press enter for the next para. That pops up the “start writing or chose a block” dialogue, pressing the + USED to open a right side menu panel, 3 columns wide, scrollable, with oft used blocks at the head.
Now it truncates at 2 rows with a “Browse All” command.
Meaning I have to complete another action, another process, another hurdle.
With all due respect, I am not convinced THIS is an improvement. However, thanks for your reply.
Wishing you a safe day. -

If you just want to write text, you don’t need to press the + to select a block. If you simply start typing each time after pressing Enter, it will select a paragraph block automatically.
There are also some shortcuts to selecting a block: If you drag an image directly from your computer into the editor, it will automatically select an image block; if you drag multiple images it will automatically select a gallery block; if you paste a link that can be embedded the appropriate embed block will be selected automatically; if you type
* some text...it will automatically create a bulleted list, etc.And if you know what block you need, just type
/blocknameand you’ll get a quick-select feature listing all blocks matching the name you’re busy typing.Clicking the + button to select a block is really only necessary if you want to see a list of all the available blocks.

Hello, nice to meet with you again.
Thx for your help last time.OK, again, thx for your reply.
I appreciate the time you invested, but it is not really in line with my point. No matter if I am typing just text, or want to change to a 3 column grid, add an image or any other task, for me, and I stress, for me, it is easier and seems far more intuitive to “go with the flow.”
That means, I finish the para and, as already explained, press return. To me it seems a natural intuitive reaction when ending a text block. In any app.
This presents the new text block option- to my right- a full option of all available tasks. Or at least it did. Now it pushes up another hurdle.
Yes, I know I could just click the + on the top left, but again, going with flow, to me, the right option seems logical and natural. Maybe it is because I am right handed?
Again, I stress, this is just my input.
As a developer I don’t see the justification of fixing something that wasn’t broken and throwing another hurdle up in the path of a user. However there seems to be a solid wall of silence from other users so obviously I am out of step. I don’t intend to follow this up.
Thanks.
