The categories and menus on my site are not functioning

  • Unknown's avatar

I just posted an album review on my site in the ‘jazz’ category under the Menu ‘Music & Messengers’, but the post is not showing under that category in that menu. It only shows as a recent post.
I checked the menu and category settings and I don’t see anything out of place.
Am I missing something or is it not showing because it is the first post in that menu item and will not show until there is more?
    Please help

Your menu link for your Jazz category actually is linking to https://musicandmindfulness.wordpress.com/category/uncategorized/

Make sure all your menu items link to the category using this form:
    https://musicandmindfulness.wordpress.com/category/jazz/

I don’t understand. It is not linked to “uncategorized” on my dashboard screen. I have the category correct and the menu says it is correct. It also says the “original category is uncategorized, but it is not that. I don’t understand why this is messed up. WordPress must have changed the way the blogs work again without saying anything , they are always doing that!

That link you posted is not a form. All it does is take me to my blog, which is not worth a crap at this point.

I think I figured it out but it seems very wrong. I re-created the menu item and then moved it up to where it should be.
My question is: one can not create a category in advance or it will not work?
If so, I will now have to reinvent the wheel. It did not work like this before even a month ago, now all of the sudden everything changed without notice.
When is WordPress going to get their act together and do things right?!
Why can’t they notify blog owners about changes? They only thing they notify about is trying to extract money for nothing!

I am sorry my reply was not helpful to you. I was posting the example of what your menu link for that category should look like. I should have been more clear.

You may use the tags on the right column of this forum page and use the tag modlook if you want to make sure a staff member sees it.

  • Hi there,

No, you cannot add a category to the menu before there are posts published in that particular category. That has always been the case. At the very least you need to create the category at Posts ->Categories in the WP-Admin dashboard first. Else you’re just adding a label to the menu that doesn’t actually link to anything.

Should you do that the software will try to connect it to the correct category when a category is eventually created, but it’s not designed to work that way and will not always succeed.

Hmm, I could swear that is what I did on my old blog (create the category first), but ok. At any rate, thank you for this answer. I will get rid of all empty categories for now, in an attempt to avoid further confusion.

  • If you create the menu in WP-Admin it’s possible, as in that interface allows you to add a category that doesn’t actually exist yet, but it’s not guaranteed to properly link to the category when it is eventually created and is as likely to just cause a dead link in the menu. I distinctly remember struggling with this myself on my site a few years ago.

If you create the category under Posts in WP-Admin and then make sure you add that category to the menu, it should work once you publish posts in that category. But in general it works better to only add the category to the menu after it’s active, i.e. has at least one post in it.
