The company hoisting my web address requests changes. How do I make them?
-
The company hosting my website, Homestead, sent me an email requesting changes. Here is what they requested:
Dear Dana,
We are in the process of making changes to our public IP space. This will change the IP address for any A record and nameservers. Since you manage your own DNS, you will be required to make the following changes:
In your DNS, you currently have your nameservers pointing to an IP address:www.dana-griffin.com
We will need you to change this record to be a CNAME that points to :
Name Server: NS1.MDNSSERVICE.COM
Name Server: NS2.MDNSSERVICE.COM
Name Server: NS3.MDNSSERVICE.COMIf you have any questions, please contact our support center at 800-428-3170.
Sincerely,
The Homestead TeamHow do I make these changes?
Thank you for your help.

HI Dana!
Could you please tell me how you want your site and domain to behave?
Currently, the domain name, dana-griffin.com is hosted by tucowsdomains.com. This domain is mapped to your WordPress.com site, danagriffin.wordpress.com.
I am able to see this configuration by looking at the public information for your domain:
http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/results.jsp?domain=dana-griffin.com
Is this correct? If you want your domain to be mapped to your WordPress.com site, it needs our name servers:
ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.comThis is how you are currently setup.
The only reason the change your name servers to NS1.MDNSSERVICE.COM, NS2.MDNSSERVICE.COM, and NS3.MDNSSERVICE.COM, is if you don’t intend for your domain to “point” to your WordPress.com site. If you don’t want your site hosted at WordPress.com, and wanted to host it elsewhere, you can change your domain’s name servers with your domain registrar.
Please let me know how you’d like me to proceed. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

Thank you for responding.
No, I want WordPress to continue hosting my site, and for my domain to “point” to my WordPress.com site.
Being a novice at website design, pointing, and hosting, I didn’t know if the email I got from Homestead required a change. From your response, I assume since I want WordPress to continue hosting my site, I do not need to do anything.
But yet today, I received another email from Homestead that states:
Dear Dana,
We are in the process of making changes to our public IP space. This will change the IP address for any CNAME record and nameservers. This only applies to those domains that do not use Homestead’s nameservers.
We recommend pointing to your homestead websites using CNAME records instead of an IP address. This provides flexibility if, for any reason, we may need to change the IP address to which you are pointed. Because you manage your own DNS, you will be required to make the following changes:
Currently, your domain,www.dana-griffin.com does not use our nameservers
We will need your nameserver to point to:
Name Server: NS1.MDNSSERVICE.COM
Name Server: NS2.MDNSSERVICE.COM
Name Server: NS3.MDNSSERVICE.COM
If you have email that is not hosted with Homestead, then you will have to update your MX records from within the Homestead domain manger, after you have changed the nameservers.
If you do not wish to change the nameservers or have other questions, please join the conversation online or call us at 800-428-3170.So, I’m confused. Do I need to make any changes?
Thank you for your help.

Hi Dana!
I don’t blame you for being confused! It’s odd that you are being sent this email from Homestead, if you’re not hosting a website with them.
You are right — if you want to continue hosting your site here at WordPress.com, and have your domain “point” to us, you shouldn’t change your name servers to Homestead’s.
The Homestead note you received does mention email. However, you’re using Email Forwarding that you set up here at WordPress.com. If that is indeed the case, you don’t have to make any adjustments to your email setup. The only reason this would be necessary is if you had your email setup via Homestead.
I hope this puts your mind at rest. As far as I can tell, no changes are necessary. You can certainly check in with Homestead and ask them why you continue to get this warning email.
If I can provide any other information, or help further, please let me know!
Thanks much…and happiest of holidays to you!
