I suspect it’s a clash between WP wanting to place ads and any Ad-blocking software extensions on the internet page.
It works fine in Google Chrome but Firefox is useless. Not the first time Firefox has caused issues for me, so I’ll try switching to Chrome.

The lack of response to this & no facility to seek proper support has me thinking of abandoning WP altogether.

No, it isn’t a clash between WP placing ads and your ad blocking software.

It is that your ISP is blocking WordPress.com. Five bucks says your ISP is TalkTalk. There are already numerous threads on this in the forums as you can see here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/talk-talk-no-data-received-error?replies=5

You just lost five bucks – give it to a charity on me ;-)
I’m well aware of the poor service TalkTalk provide & wouldn’t use them if it was free. Thanks for the link, it didn’t have any answers though. Though as others said on it, I’m not on a mobile and it is just WordPress that’s affected.
It only started happening in the past day or so, so I suspect either WP or Firefox has done an auto update that clashes.

    Okay, what IS your ISP?

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry – I’m not going down that route.
I have few if any of the problems that you linked to. I can get into my admin page & my home page by deleting all caches, history & cookies, but by getting there I’ve obviously created a new history etc so it reverts back to the “Server was reset” etc. for any subsequent pages I want to get into to edit.
Google Chrome works so it can’t be an ISP caused issue. Looks like I’ll have to migrate all of my FF settings into Chrome.

  • Unknown's avatar

What version of FF were you using?

  • Unknown's avatar

Whatever their latest version is, I had it set to automatic updates & had their Ad-blocker activated, but that’s worked fine for a month so I’m not sure if it’s connected. I de-activated it & still have the same problem. Not the best of ideas I know, but even if you don’t they still do them anyway after a while.
On the 17th of this month there was an auto-download of a new Firefox & also a “Mozilla Maintenance System”, which I’ve uninstalled but again – no difference.

I’m not keen on Chrome’s layout but I suppose I’ll get used to it.

Did you have your FF set to accept cookies? Sometimes with the upgrades that gets disabled, particularly for Europeans, to comply with the new cookie laws.

  • Unknown's avatar

It was before, so should be now & I hadn’t had any prompts appear.

    Great! Now I’m getting ……
“Unable to load the web page because the server sent no data.
    Error code: ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE” in Chrome.

Is there a different result when you try to open the dashboard vs simply viewing the blog? Is there an improvement if you’re signed out?

  • Unknown's avatar

It does the same (when logged in) to any page away from the home page, so can’t get into “dashboard”
My Mrs can access all pages in Firefox but is now seeing adverts when she didn’t before.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well, if you don’t have the No Ads upgrade, there will be ads there. Staff recently changed things so that when our readers see an ad, we see a box saying, basically, “this is where we put the ads your readers see.”

  • Unknown's avatar

Ah – so that ads thing IS a recent thing then. I just logged out & restarted my router & laptop which was also recommended on some threads & now I can’t get my WP site at all.
Maybe that’ll fix it for me by not letting me use it at all – or get in to try other fixes. Ha, ha!

  • Unknown's avatar

Just the display to logged in WP.com users is a recent thing. They’ve run ads since i’ve been here, and I’ve been here over seven years.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hmm, just restarted; logged out I can see all of my pages no problem – and with no adverts!!
When I log in it’s back to the “Server reset” message.

  • Unknown's avatar

OK – so I’ve got a dead site – it can be looked at, but can’t be edited or updated.
is this forum the start and end of any support that WordPress gives?

  • Unknown's avatar

We have received a number of reports that our users with the ISP TalkTalk are having difficulties accessing WordPress.com sites.

Please see https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/dashboard-errors-related-to-talktalk-isp-issue?replies=1 for more information.

If you are not on TalkTalk, please let me know what your ISP is, as it may be related.
