The customize button under appearance will no longer work.

  The customize button under appearances won’t load, so we can’t set a home page. When I click appearance, then customize, the tools just load FOREVER.

  That’s probably a browser issue, has been reported by several other users, but you don’t really need that button: it simply brings together various options that are already available elsewhere (you set a header image in Appearance > Header, set a static front page in Settings > Reading etc).
