the customize option doesn't work—it won't load in at all.

  customize option brings up a blank screen regardless of the theme i install. on the far right, it says “Loading design tools” but they never load, and the site never shows up in the center. i’ve tried 2 different browsers on 2 different computers.

  Assuming you’re not talking about CSS editing, you don’t need the customizer. See here:
