The description is too long or too short.
-
I have followed the instructions for the Bing webmaster but I get told “The description is too long or too short.”. When I search in Bing it does not find my site. Google works perfectly.
-
Hi, could you send a link to the site you’re having trouble with? You have a few associated with this account.
Please note, by the way, these forums are for the sites hosted and managed here at WordPress.com. For help with a site hosted somewhere else, you’ll need to use the forums for self-managed WordPress installations instead.

Thank you, would you also clarify which particular part of Bing you’re referring to, and for which page?
I’m seeing the front page has a description of 50 characters. Is it having trouble with that or something else?
Also, is it a warning or an error you cannot get past?

It is the SEO Analyzer on this page
https://www.bing.com/webmaster/diagnostics?url=http%3A%2F%2Farthurd.art.blog%2FWhich takes you through to this page. It is this page that says that the description is too long or too short

From what I can see, Bing advises using a maximum meta description length of 160 characters so I’m not sure if they could consider yours too short. You might want to contact them for more information.

On WordPress.com no, there’s no way to increase that.
It’s odd anyway, the description on my site is shorter than the maximum permitted and it does appear on Bing without problems.Just to be sure, you’re following these steps, right?
https://wordpress.com/support/webmaster-tools/#bing-webmaster-centerCould you take a screenshot of the error that you see? You can use an online tool for that (such as https://snipboard.io/) and add the link to your reply.

Yes I followed these step. I tried a few times.
Here is the snipboard link. https://snipboard.io/TQBLSv.jpg -
Can Bing provide you with an exact sweet spot of character range to avoid that first error? It seems very odd.
I’ve cleared the site’s cache just in case that will make any difference. You could also clear your browser cache. Here’s how:

Hi again, just wanting to clarify a few things.
I have tried to find the “ideal” description length from Bing but, ironically, their webmaster guidelines are not searchable. But I did find this site, which suggests keeping your description between 70 and 150 characters.
Is there a way of increasing the description?
You can’t change the max length of the description allowed here on WordPress.com. But it is already longer than the 155 characters Bing wants. And you can absolutely change the description.
I checked your site description with this character counter, and it is only 50 characters long.
So if you want to try changing your site description to add just a bit more text, feel free. That’s here, under Tagline: https://wordpress.com/settings
Also, in my quest to figure this out, I signed up for Bing just to look at this :) I noticed their SEO analyzer is in beta mode, so … it’s possible it’s having some kind of bug. So if all of this doesn’t work, I’d suggest bearing in mind Bing is only giving suggestions on what may be optimal, or I’d check with them directly.
Hoping this helps.

One more thing, I thought I’d add I couldn’t get the “too short too long” error with my own site. My site description is only 35 characters long, and Bing doesn’t say that description is too long or too short.
So if I had to guess? You’re likely just seeing a bug in their beta tool. Bugs are common things in beta.
My description doesn’t contain any commas, so maybe test by removing those and see what it thinks.
Good luck!
-
I understand what you say about it being a beta version but I only used it because Bing can not find my site. If I search in google it finds the site no problem but Bing doesn’t realise that it exists.
-
OK. I’d recommend trying to make your site tagline longer then, and try removing the commas. If that doesn’t work, please reach out to Bing’s support.
-
I have tried making my tag line longer and removing commas but bing still can not find the site. Thanks for trying.
-
but bing still can not find the site
It sounded to me like they had found the site, but the problem was with the description or how they were seeing it. If they aren’t finding the site at all, please let us know so we can help with that.
-
It must be finding the site because it shows the page when it says the description is too long or short. It seems to be that it is not searchable because of the description size.
