The dropdown menus on our blog disappeared
-
The dropdown menus were working properly yesterday, but suddenly this evening, they have all disappeared and we cannot find them. We have looked on multiple computers, and they don’t show up anywhere. Some of the menu items have disappeared, as well. None of our team has changed anything in the time period between when they were working and when they disappeared. Help?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

At the bottom of the Menu Structure at Menu Settings > Theme Locations, the box labeled Primary Navigation must be checked in order for your custom menu to display instead of the default menu. Have you checked that?

I looked for that option and could not find it.
This is what I see when I open up the Menu Structure page (at the very bottom, right before the “delete menu” option):Menu Settings
__ Auto add pages Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu
__Theme locations Primary Menu (Currently set to: Menu 1)
__Secondary Menu -

Under the “Manage Locations” section, it tells me:
“Your theme supports 2 menus. Select which menu appears in each location.”And then says that the Theme Location is an Assigned Menu (gives no ability to change it)
Under Primary Menu, it has one of my menus selected, there’s also a secondary menu selected.
That is all that is on that page. -
The Menu Settings section of the Menu Structure, will not be found under “Manage Locations.” It’s under “Edit Menu.” Scroll to the bottom of the Menu Structure. At Menu Settings > Theme Locations you should see two options, with check boxes. The “Primary Menu” box should be checked.

Correction: “Edit Menus”
Of course, if you have multiple menus you’ll have to choose the appropriate menu here, before scrolling down to the Menu Settings. -

I should have thought of this before. Perhaps checking the primary menu box, deploying the custom menu, is what caused the change you report. If the site previously had the default menu displayed, with a page hierarchy (parents, children, grandchildren, etc.) created at Page Attributes, then a custom menu was created using only the top-level pages, then you’d be missing all of the child pages. In a custom menu, a link to each child page must be added as a separate item and nested beneath the corresponding top-level (parent) page. Not doing so would explain the absence of the child pages on the custom menu.
-
A custom menu is composed only of links, and will display only those links added to the menu. It doesn’t honor the page hierarchy created at Page Attributes.

Hi moscow57blog,
I have reviewed your site and you currently do not have any subpages for your menu. You must have at least one subpage for the dropdowns to appear. Here is how to add subparent pages:

Hi bdukes,
I see what you are talking about, however, I believe that’s exactly the issue. Thursday of last week, we had multiple children and grandchildren of our menu options (in fact, very few of the top menu items did NOT have children and grandchildren). And then as of Friday evening, they all had completely disappeared and we cannot find them anywhere. No one on our team edited the blog in any way during that time, and the only thing that even remotely changed was that Thursday night, we posted a new blog post (but we are reasonably certain that the menu sub-options still existed for at least the next few hours after that blog post went live).

@ moscow57blog
Have you tried unchecking “Primary Menu” at Menu Settings? This would result in the default menu displaying, which might be what was displaying before the change you report.

I don’t know where you live, but if you’re ever in the New York City area, come down to our restaurant for free drinks and zakuski (Russian tapas). My boss (and all of us here) are incredibly grateful…
