Hi kathflores23
I hope that I have identified the correct area that you are wanting to alter. Try the following custom CSS.
.site-main { background-color: #FF8E8A; padding: 1em; border-radius: 6px; }To add custom CSS
Select Appearance > Customize > CSS from your Admin Dashboard and enter the custom CSS there.
You need to be on the WordPress.com Premium Plan for custom CSS to save.

You can change the backgrounf color by replacing #FF8E8A with your own color code.
http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_colorpicker.asp is a good site to find color codes.

Hi @kathflores23, give the following a try and see what you think.
.archive .content-area, .blog .content-area, .error404 .content-area { background-color: #cc0000; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; max-width: 1300px; width: 100%; }
