Yes, it appears that the option to ‘expand on click’ has disappeared AGAIN. Why do WordPress continually mess about with this function?

Hi there!
In order to verify your issue, you need to provide more details about it, including a screenshot.
Which section on your site are you at; what exactly do you click using which browser? -
This is the screenshot from the WordPress.com support guide to the Image Block

That last line, “Expand on click” which in a previous iteration was moved from the Editor’s Block tab in the sidebar to the Link icon, is now missing entirely from the Editor interface.
Tested in Vivaldi, Firefox, MSEdge and Brave-all latest versions
Thanks for any assistance.

I also have this strange problem with SINGLE IMAGES in WordPress, where since some days ago I can not enable the “Expand on Click” feature for a NEW IMAGE added to my page. Only “Link to image file” and “Link to attachment page” features are available under the “Chain” icon.
But, on the other hand, if I DUPLICATE an existing image (where that “Expand on Click” was enabled, because some days ago it was available) then, I can REPLACE later for a new image, and then yes, the “Expand on Click” feature it’s available for this new image, also.
This is occurring on this page:
Quick Exercises
(latest 3 big isolated images have the “Expand on Click” feature enabled, only because I duplicated some previous image, with that feature enabled, and then replaced it. Because it’s not possible to enable on them from scratch)

As I have stated on several forum posts about this topic (with no resolve), this is the third time this year that WordPress have deleted this functionality. It is nothing to do with web browsers, themes, or any of the other excuses that they try to suggest. Judging by the number of entries on these forums in each 24 hour period reporting problems, it would appear that the WordPress ship may be sinking.

I’m experiencing the same problem. Why does this keep happening? It would be better to withdraw the feature altogether, than to make it available on a part-time basis …

I might as well add that WPcom News just published an article that explains that the lightbox is dependent on the Interactivity API and gives the Image Block as an example (!)
The Image block, in particular, is a great way to show off the Interactivity API in action.
At its core, the Image blocks allow you to add an image to a post or page. When a user clicks on an image in a post or page, the Interactivity API launches a lightbox showing a high-resolution version of the image.

But it still doesn’t.
Whether this feature will be reinstated here or not only Staff can advise. This thread is again flagged for Staff.

Apparently the Image Block support guide was very recently updated to now include the following line under Expand on Click:
This option is only available after disabling the image gallery carousel.
And after disabling the Image Carousel in my site’s Settings>Media, the option to Expand on click has returned.

Expand on click So it seems we can only use one feature or the other, Image Carousel for Galleries or Expand on Click on individual images, but not both on the same site.

I use both features. WordPress ‘General Wonderment & All-Round Happiness’ Engineers are too busy to comment here, at all, but in direct support requests they say there’s a BUG. Is there ANYONE THERE? What a shit show.
