The free plan cannot back up the contents under my original business plan by using the method to access external images in the articles.
-
As title, I am migrating my wordpress.com to wordpress.org on a new host. I originally had about 120 articles (with lots of images) under the business plan. But downgrade to free plan after expiration. I export the article .xml file to a new host, and I want to import my images by downloading external images. I found that only about 60 articles in the first half had successful execution. Most of the images in relatively new articles failed to load.
I would like to know how this problem can be solved ?Thanks!

Hello there,
Many thanks for reaching out.

Ok, just to check, are you saying that the XML only contained half of the content when downloaded whilst on the business plan? Or, have you downloaded the content prior to the business plan expiring?
Many thanks in advance.

Hi,
I’m use wordpress.com Tools > Export to download all of my posts after the business plan expiring. But the relevant images in the posts are not displayed properly.
I’ve found that half of the older posts can successfully display the images.
In addition, I have tried to use Tools > Export to download the media library, but it cannot be downloaded because the file is too large.
I would like to ask what is the problem and how to solve it?
Thanks!

Hello there,
Many thanks for that additional information.
May I ask you to export via this link here: https://workhardplayharderdotblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/export.php
And then re-attempt an import.
Please let me know how you get on with this step here, as this will determine next steps.

Hello there,
So the link above will generate a new XML file, which may be more precise, and this import file could be used for another import attempt.
The old file can either be delete or overwritten.

Hi @aleone89,
This is the website on the new host after I imported the XML file.
https://work-hard-play-harder.blog/You can see that many posts have no way to load related images.
Older posts can successfully display images, I’m not sure if this problem is caused by limitations on the WORDPRESS.COM free plan?
Thanks!

Hello there,
It’s unlikely, but not unheard of that this would happen because of the site being on the free plan.
I’ve taken a look https://work-hard-play-harder.blog/ and I can see images in place – is there a place in particular where the site is missing images?
It may be the case that the images are loading from the old image URL link, whereby a Search and Replace may resolve that.
Many thanks.

Hi @aleone89,
The images for the first two posts were uploaded manually by us.
Taking this post as an example, most of the images cannot be loaded correctly.
https://reurl.cc/pMm8pxI found that the correct image source is
The incorrect is
What could this problem be?
Did it happen during the migration to a new host? Can I use Search and Replace tools to replace the wrong src strings ?
Thanks!

Hello there,
I found that the correct image source is
The incorrect isI can’t see what these image sources are, but if there’s two different sources at play, it most likely is the cause of the issue you’re facing there.
This plugin here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/better-search-replace/ will allow you to do that search and replace.

Hi @aleone89,
Take the above post as an example.
I found that the correct image source is workhardplayharderdotblog.files.wordpress.com/2022/07/8a86a-dsc_4742.jpg?w=640#038;h=684 with HTTPS
The incorrect image source that can not be display is i0.wp.com/atomic-temporary-165809663.wpcomstaging.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/合併-1024×683.jpg?resize=640%2C427&ssl=1 with HTTPS
I can use the plugin ‘better-search-replace’ to replace specific text, but it’s still an error to replace only this string “i0.wp.com/atomic-temporary-165809663.wpcomstaging.com/wp-content/uploads/”.
What could the problem be? Thanks!
-
Hi,
How do you know that this is the same image? The filename, size, and path are different.
-
Hi @fstat,
These are different images.
After the migration from wordpress.com to wordpress.org, most image sources are divided into two types. The image source that can be displayed in my post is like this: workhardplayharderdotblog.files.wordpress.com/2022/07/8a86a-dsc_4742.jpg?w=640#038;h=684 with HTTPS
And the image source that cannot be displayed will be like this: i0.wp.com/atomic-temporary-165809663.wpcomstaging.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/合併-1024×683.jpg?resize=640%2C427&ssl=1 with HTTPS

Thanks for the additional info!
From what I can see, there are a few issues here. Firstly, the image links were not correctly re-written when the site contents were updated. But also, the second issue is that the images themselves (which should appear in the media library) do not seem to be imported.
For example, image links that are native to your site use this format:

Click that link, for example, and you will see an image from your most recent blog post.
So it should be the case that if you modify:

To use that corrected URL, you should see an image at:

If you click that link, you can see that you get a 404 page and not an image, which indicates that it was never imported. A “find and replace” plugin cannot fix the issue because fixing the URL does not call up the image.
I export the article .xml file to a new host, and I want to import my images by downloading external images. I found that only about 60 articles in the first half had successful execution.
Your earlier comment also indicates the import was only partial, as I see 119 blog posts on your WordPress.com site at https://workhardplayharderdotblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php.
Please try importing again from your WordPress.com site, and this should upload the missing images. You can compare what you see here on your WordPress.com site to the media library on your new site to confirm they have been imported: https://workhardplayharderdotblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php?mode=list.
Also, please note that your media library is almost 40GB in size, so it can take some time to import your images, and in some cases, your new host may not be able to handle all that data in a single session which will cause the import to “time out.”
If you continue to see missing content, you may wish to create smaller export files of maybe just a month or two of blog posts at a time (you will see this option when you start a new export) to help things along.
Note that repeated attempts to import will usually skip the content you already have successfully imported and only bring over content that still appears to be missing, such as your missing images.
