The hyperlink function is not working on my free wordpress.com site.

Add new images to a page. I’ve previously had no problems with this function it just seems to have stopped working for some unknown reason. The link icon won’t highlight and therefore won’t add the link when the ULR is added. Any suggestions please?

HI there,
Can you please tell me whether your using a browser, or the desktop app. Also which browser and version number, or the app on Windows, Linux or Mac.
If you’re using a browser, can you please try clearing your browser cache and cookies and see if that makes any difference?
Browser IssuesAlso please let me know whether you’re using the editor at WordPress.com/post or the one in the WP-Admin dashboard. Thanks.

I’m not very technical in relation to IT. I just access my site via a wordpress log-in icon added to my desktop homescreen. I’m not sure if it’s the actual wordpress app. My desktop uses Windows 8.1. My browser is Google Chrome, not sure what version, pretty recent though. I’ve cleared the browser history as you directed.
I’m using the edit page function to try and link an Image.Regards,
Steve. -
When you click the WordPress icon, does it open an app on your screen, or does it load the WordPress.com website in Chrome?
If it loads the website in Chrome, what is the URL appearing in the browser address bar that shows what page you’re currently viewing? I specifically need the URL of the page where the link icon won’t work.
After clearing the browser cache and cookies, does anything happen now when you click the link icon? Or is there no change when you do that?

I’ve cleared the browser history as you directed.
Clearing browser history won’t do anything. You need to clear the browser cache and cookies specifically.
Here are the instructions how to do that in Chrome:

Pressing the wordpress icon on my homescreen opens the wordpress.com log-in box. I think in the chrome browser, the ULR is: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php
The ULR of page i’m trying to edit is: https://wordpress.com/page/12stepphilosophy.wordpress.com/26
The ULR of the page i’m trying to add as a Link is: https://www.amazon.com/12-Step-Philosophy-Alcoholics-Interpretation/dp/132606102X/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1444442257&sr=8-1
I have cleared the browser’s cache and cookies etc and it’s made no difference.

Thank you for the extra info.
I checked all the images on that page, and I’m able to add links to all of them.
In your first post you said:
The link icon won’t highlight and therefore won’t add the link when the ULR is added.
The icon should only be “highlighted”, i.e. show a frame around it, if you click on an image that’s already linked somewhere. If you click an image that’s not linked the icon shouldn’t change until you click on it.
Can you please edit the page again, click on the image, and click on the link icon. Does it open the pop-up box where you add the link, or does nothing at all happen when you click it?
-
Yes it opens the pop up box where the ULR is paste into and then press add. It doesn’t accept the ULR properly and then doesn’t update. If I then press on the image again and press the link icon the pop up box is either empty or has the image address in the box where the ULR of the link should be.

I’m trying to link the first book cover: The 12 Step Philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous:An Intrepretation by Steve K.
-
I tried adding the link now from my end and it saved without any trouble. I’m afraid I can’t tell why this is happening. It thought that maybe the editor wouldn’t accept that link due to the special characters in it, but if that was the problem it wouldn’t have worked for me either.
But that link works now. I attached it to the front cover image.
If you run into this issue again using different links, let me know.
-
Thanks. I’ve now downloaded the WordPress App onto my desktop homescreen and I’ve been able to apply links elsewhere on my site normally so the problem is now resolved.

Thanks for letting me know. I’ll do some testing in Chrome to see if I can reproduce the issue, though. And please let me know if you run into this again.

I now realise I didn’t have Chrome as my default browser and WordPress was loading through Internet Explorer probably an older version. I read somewhere that older versions of Explorer are not fully compatible with WordPress? So maybe this was the issue. Anyhow I’ve now got Chrome as my default browser and all is good.
Thanks again,

An outdated version of IE can definitely be the cause.
I’m glad you figured it out, and thanks for letting me know.
