The latest version of the Block Editor messes up my content.

The newest Block Editor is an improvement, but it still actively hampers my efforts. On the plus side, I can finally add attributions to my contributor’s photos. It’s annoying that this option is buried in an Advanced section that I have to manually open for EVERY photo, but that’s bearable.
What’s disastrous is that the Block Editor doesn’t seem to have options to post the pictures full size and build in a link to the media file. Worse, the Block Editor sets the images to Custom Size with no link. This makes the preview function pretty useless. I have to switch to the Classic Editor to force the images to be full size with the media link, and even then the Block Editor butts in with warnings and messes everything up again. Is there a way to set the Classic Editor as my default so I don’t have to fix everything two or three times?

    Hi @icecaptain

I think you can get quick help about this if you post your query on this thread https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/unified-navigation/

It seems they made it specifically for the issues you are having.

I for one am still waiting for this new version, eagerly might I add😁

Thanks, therefoiam. I did fill out a report there, although I have no idea what the relationship between “Calypso” and Block Editor is.

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for reaching back out.

Are you able to provide an example of the page or post you’re looking to create please?

The reason why I ask is because you’ve mentioned that, “What’s disastrous is that the Block Editor doesn’t seem to have options to post the pictures full size and build in a link to the media file.”

This does sound possible with the block editor, but I suspect that you may need some guidance on the blocks being used to achieve that.

    I hope this helps.

Here is a link to the most recent page I struggled with:

Please note that there are six photographs of about 9MB each.
Their dimensions are 4032 x 3024. The full resolution is needed to see features like small patches of open water.

So I just attempted to create a dummy page with Block Editor, using one of the previously uploaded images from the page above. As before, I selected the image icon from the block’s toolbar. This time, I did find the option in a pull-down menu to set the image to Full Size versus Large, so that’s one hurdle that might be overcome.

There is an advanced option for something called an HTML Anchor, but it’s not clear from the description whether this would do the same thing as the WP Admin’s Link to Media option, which allows a site visitor to see each of the pictures full-screen, and even zoom in at full resolution to look for those details.

The Anchor function is similar in that you can enter an HTML address for the media file, but it’s not clear whether a link would be imbedded, or just created.

If it turns out that I have just been confused by the wording of feature descriptions, I apologize. If this is the case, I’m grateful for your tactful wording about “guidance on the blocks being used.” This blog only runs for a month or two each year, so I am always rusty for the first few days. At an average of one or more posts per day, I catch up fast, but there isn’t a lot of time for experimenting with new techniques and interfaces.

An earlier respondent sent me a link that should have enabled me to select WP Admin as my preferred interface, but somehow it always directed me to the wrong one of my blogs, and when I switched to Ice Patrol, the settings page I arrived at looked nothing like the [Calypso?] version illustrated in the example.

One wish-list feature I have never been able to accomplish on WordPress is to augment these photographs with Labels that can be toggled on (to help people get oriented: names of islands, pointer for North etc.) or off to reveal the basic photograph without text obscuring parts of the image. If you have an idea how THAT might be accomplished, I’d be keen to hear about it.

    Thanks,
    Tim

  • Hello Tim,

Many thanks for that detailed explanation there.

It doesn’t look like a link was provided, if you’re able to provide that, we’ll be able to retrace some steps there.

    Many thanks in advance.

Hmm. I used the link button at the top of this box. I’ll try it again

and just in case, I’ll send the web address in plain text for you to copy and paste.

  • Hello there,

Perfect – many thanks for that.

There is an advanced option for something called an HTML Anchor, but it’s not clear from the description whether this would do the same thing as the WP Admin’s Link to Media option, which allows a site visitor to see each of the pictures full-screen, and even zoom in at full resolution to look for those details.

An HTML anchor is an anchor link – so for example if you wanted to send a link to people where they can get to that spot on the page you can create that.

So if you were to add “icelake” as an HTML anchor, the link to that spot on the page would mysite.com/#icelake

Ordinary image blocks don’t have the ability to click them open and zoom (known as a lightbox). For this you would need a gallery block.

That’s quite a specific requirement, a gallery block does have the ability to add captions, and it’s discreet in appearance as seen here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/gallery-block/

    Is that what you mean?

    Many thanks in advance.

Okay, I can use the HTML Anchor for other stuff, like sending people to a reference picture. That’ll help me clean up my Glossary page. Actually, the Gallery tool could help that look really great, too.

If I understand you correctly, I am already creating lightboxes with WP Admin, using the Link to Media option within the Edit Image menu.

I didn’t see anything in the Gallery tool that would do anything more than add a caption at the bottom of the image. I was after something more like what I’ve seen on the famous Astronomy Picture of the Day blog. For instance, they might display a picture of a starry sky, and when you float your cursor over it, the names and outlines of the constellations appear. It seems as if a new layer is overlaid on the image, but they might actually be substituting an augmented image in its place.

Thanks for your help so far,
    Tim

  • Hi there,

If you are referring to being able to have hover text over images like what you find with tooltips – this is most likely something you can do but will require CSS via the Premium and Business Plans.

    http://wordpress.com/plans

Let me know if this is what you are referring to.

    Thanks,
