The links tool on the tool bar is not working in the new new post format…and the in the old new post format, the links tool doesnt allow you to change how the link appears (i.e. by giving it a friendly name)

    Hi there,

The links tool in the new post editor should work the same way as in the classic editor: Links

You can control how the link appears by writing out the text you want to turn into a link, highlighting the text, and clicking the link button. If that isn’t working for you, please let me know exactly what steps you’re using to create a link — that will help me look into this for you. :)

They usually work in the same way, but the old style post creator has only 2 fields in the create link box and the new one has 4, allowing the link to be named, not just showing the hmm link. However, in new version of the new post creator, the link button is remaining greyed out

The link button will remain greyed out until you highlight a piece of text that you want to turn into a link. For example, if you want to create a link that looks like this:

    Links

You can type the word “Links” in the editor, highlight it, and then click the link button there. Then, you can enter the link you want the word “Links” to go to. Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Yep. It remained greyed out after highlighting the relevant link

Hm, that’s odd. Can you make a screenshot of what you see in the editor? You can upload screenshots to your Media Library under Media > Add New in your dashboard, or you can use an online service like Snaggy.

I’ll sort it out when I get home….

OK – so i have uploaded a screen shot to the blog page – thanks for looking at it – its still greyed out tonight….

Thanks for that screenshot. I did more investigating, and so far I can’t reproduce the problem you’re having with the link button. If you don’t mind, I’d like you to try a couple things to see if we can pinpoint what’s going on:

    1. Can you try disabling any Chrome extensions you have installed to see if that makes a difference? You can disable those here: chrome://extensions/

    2. Can you try using a different browser to see if it works there? You can download the latest versions of popular browsers here: http://browsehappy.com/

Please let me know if either of those works for you.

ok, so in chrome, I disabled the extensions. the Link button is still greyed out. It kind of works in IE, but I only get the 2 box link editor rather than the 4 box link editor which allowed you to change the way your links look so they have a name rather than a web address….

Thanks for letting me know. It sounds like the problem with the Link button not working is specific to your Chrome browser. Can you please check to see if Javascript is completely enabled in Chrome?

You can check that from your Chrome settings here: chrome://settings/

At the bottom of that page, you can click on “Show advanced settings…” Then, under Privacy, click the “Content settings” button. Under JavaScript there, make sure it’s set to “Allow all sites to run JavaScript (recommended).”

Then, please try refreshing the post editor to see if that Link button starts working for you.

It kind of works in IE, but I only get the 2 box link editor rather than the 4 box link editor which allowed you to change the way your links look so they have a name rather than a web address….

In IE, in the post editor, you can write the name you want the link to have. Then, you can highlight that name and click the Link button. There, you can enter the link itself. That way, you’ll have a named link instead of just the web address itself.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)
