The Media Library and me wanting to clear it out
-
Just now I checked the Media Library — which I never before looked at. I see that I have 60 pages of mostly photo files.
What will happen if I delete those photo files? Will photos that I used be deleted from the posts, or will these only effect photos that were linked to the file in the library?I just now used the Media Library to store a document, which is in a Comment that has a link to that document. Obvious, it seems to me that if I delete that file, then anyone clicking onto that link will get nothing .
Am I missing something here? :-)

If those images have been inserted into post, then all the images in the posts will be gone if you delete the image from the media library. Images are not “part” of the post. All images displayed in posts and pages are referenced or rendered from the files in the media library.
If you upload a document of any type, image, .doc, pdf or whatever to the media library and then link to that file in a post, then if you delete the file from the media library the link in the post will be broken. The file does not exist anymore after you delete it from the media library as far as wordpress is concerned.

Oh my. 8-( After I wrote the question I went in and deleted a bunch of pictures. Most of them were from pages that no longer exist, but some were valid pages.
I should have waited for the answer before doing that.

Is there a way of knowing (other than the old fashioned Go-Look-Up-Each-Post way) whether a file in the Media Library is no longer necessary because the post that had it no longer exists?
