The "More" tag, I'm still confused.

I’ve been trying to simply insert the more tag into several places in a very looooong “gallery” kind of post that needs breaking up. Is that the correct way to do this, or not? I read that the tag doesn’t work unless we actually publish a post. I did that, but it still doesn’t work for me. Should I even be using More or should I just break the collection into several posts and then link them together?

No. We insert “the more tag” only once into a post. To do what you want to do in a long post we use pagination (next page) or page jump links Please see here > http://support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/nextpage/

Looks like a “next page” link would be exactly what I need :-) Page jumping would still require my long post to load, and for anyone on dialup (there surely must be a handful of others out there!), that would take eons…

Yeah, the more tag is a one time only insert whereas the next page tag can be used multiple times and each insertion creates a new page.
