The new ‘Blocks’ Editor

I tried the ‘Blocks’ Editor last night for the first time. It wasn’t a fun experience.

The way I work is… I write and format all of my text in my eMail program. Then I Copy it and Paste it into a new WordPress Post. (I do this because I’m sending it to more than one place and this is the easiest way for me to accomplish this.) I did that within the Blocks Editor and it Indented some of my un-Indented text and removed the Bullets and Indenting from other text.

I looked through the Blocks formatting options but I couldn’t find any way to change part of my poured text into Bulleted items.

Is there a way for me to simply pour my formatted text into that new Editor without WordPress changing anything?

Instead of copying and pasting, it would be better to write and format your text directly in the WordPress editor. When you format a text in e.g. Word or your email client, it produces sloppy html with a lot of unnecessary code. Not all formatting created in a word processor will be reproduced when pasting into WordPress.com’s editor.
To answer your question: no there isn’t.

Did you know that you can also post to your WPcom site by email? https://wordpress.com/support/post-by-email/

Not sure what changes, if any, will be made to that process once the block editor becomes the default editor, but I’ve flagged this thread for Staff.

I had forgotten that “Posting from eMail” was possible but, before testing that, I read through a few helpful entries here and discovered the “Classic Block”.

I tested this by Copying the text from a previous Post (in “Apple Mail”). I then opened WordPress, made sure “Block Editor” was enabled, searched for “Classic Block” and Pasted my text.

    Everything looks fine. Problem solved.

  • Glad you’ve got it!

Still, in general, I’d recommend against using another editor to format your content, since that will often apply styles and formats that don’t exist on your site. If you’d like, type up your text, then paste it here, and then format as you like. And if you’d like to add bullets as you type your text, try using dashes like this:

    - one
    - two
    - three

When you paste, those will automatically be converted to a list block, and you’ll have more options there.

Regarding PBE: as far as I know, Post By Email should still work with the block editor, but I haven’t experimented to see whether it preserves formatting from other editors.
