The "new improved" edit page loses paragraph breaks
-
I prefer the old edit page and always use it in creating new posts. However, occasionally after I’ve published a post, I notice a typo and want to fix it. I click on “Edit Post” on the post itself. That takes me to the new edit page (after an annoying visual of “beep beep boop”). I fix the typo. Then… voila! The typo is gone, but so are all of the paragraph breaks! This happened once or twice before and I said to myself, “I will go around to the old edit page.” But this time I just happened to forget, and clicked on that “Edit Post” link. And once I updated, all the paragraph breaks were gone. This was incredibly annoying, even more so than usual, because this time my post had some quoted verse that I had to do in html to avoid extra spaces between the lines. All gone! ARGHHH! I did the paragraphing all over again, cursing to myself. Can’t this bug be eliminated?

Are you using the classic editor to create posts?
Dashboard > Posts > Add NewOr are you using the new Beep Beep Boop editor?
I suggest trying “the other one” whichever it may be for you.
Are you running a browser and version of it found at http://browsehappy.com? If not, please upgrade.
If you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph. If you are working in the HTML editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines.
Blog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-html/
If you are copying and pasting from a word processing document like Microsoft WORD note that the paste as WORD button was removed from the editor months ago. If you use the Paste as plain text button then a special cleanup process will run to remove any special formatting and HTML tags that may otherwise change your text. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text Therefore you have to do your own formatting and spacing.
Whether or not you are copying and pasting go to > Dashboard > Settings > Writing and enable this setting:
Formatting
__ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
“save changes”IMPORTANT NOTE: When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.
Also note raincoaster’s editing tip:
When you fix the spacing, you have to start at the top and work down. If you start at the bottom and work up, it always double spaces at least one line.
If you’re using the mobile app then see here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/single-spacing-4?replies=5#post-2346693

timethief, thanks for the tip on how to get single spacing between paragraphs in visual mode. This is something I only need to do when quoting poetry, but it’s good to know. I have to say that some of your other tips are a bit complex, but I will print out your comment for future reference. I do not think of any WordPress edit page as a word processor, and I do not copy and paste from Word.
And as I mentioned, I always create posts in the old/classic edit mode, which I much prefer. It is only when I get into the new edit mode (kind of accidentally) when editing an already created post that I run into this problem. I can edit an already created post in the old/classic mode without any difficulties.
If the answer is that I need to do extra preliminary things with a format tool in order not to have problems, I ask, why was this not necessary in the classic mode and now it is necessary in the supposedly easier mode?

I did not mean to overwhelm you and I am sorry if that was the case. Please be patient while waiting for a Staff response.

That’s certainly very frustrating, and I apologize that you’ve had to redo work because of the issue. We have had reports of this, and we’re trying to track down why it might be occurring. Just to confirm a few more details, you’re currently using Firefox 37.0. Is that correct? If you’re unsure, you can confirm by visiting this site:
Have you noticed this every time you open a post in the New Editor or does this occur somewhat erratically?
-
Yes, that is correct, I am using Firefox 37.0. This problem with the paragraph breaks has occurred each time I have used the new editor to update an already-published post. (I don’t deliberately select the new editor, but if I click “Edit Post” on the published page, I automatically get that beep-beep-boop deal that tells me I’m on the new editor.) I don’t update published posts very often, so I haven’t experienced this all that many times, but yes, every time I’ve done that, it’s resulted in the correction I wanted to make but also the complete loss of paragraph breaks. Thank you for your interest.

Thanks so much for the additional information! I’ll update this thread as soon as I know more about why this might be happening.
