The New "My Blogs" Tab

Is anyone else annoyed by the latest change made to the “My Blogs” tab?

It now gives me two links to the front page of the blog, but none to the Dashboard. I’d like a one-clink link to the Dashboard.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I just noticed that. It is indeed annoying.

    Count me in. Really annoying.

I remember the days when the WordPress.com homepage was displaying the admin bar which you now only see when visiting the dashboard of one of your blogs. Back then it was easy to visit the dashboard of each of your blogs with just a simple click.

Then Automattic made a big change to the homepage and now you needed another click on “My Blogs” just to visit the Dashboard of one of your blogs.

With these new changes it’s now not possible to open the Dashboard of your blogs at all. What’s the agenda behind all these changes? To make the homepage as impractical as possible? As feedingsquirrels already notices. The blog title is already a link to the front page. Can’t the “Visit Blog”-Link be replace with one to the Dashboard?

Why is the new page not showing the Blavatar but an “mshot” instead? You can’t identify anything on them due to being so small. Another downside is, it’s not working for private blogs. Can’t this be reverted to Blavatar or at least only “mshots” as a fallback when no gravatar is specified?

    +1

  • Howdy all,

I’m going to look into this and see what the story is.

However, in the meantime, you can reach your Dashboard by clicking either the “posts” or “pages” link. No, it doesn’t send you to the main Dashboard page, but it does get you into the backend of your site directly.

    Hi rootjosh,

I’m not sure what we’re exactly talking about when we say “Dashboard”. For me “Dashboard” means Dashboard – Dashboard. ;)

I’m talking about the homepage at

    BLOGNAME.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

. Better said Dashboard → Home.

When you talk about the Dashboard, you obviously mean the backend of the blog no matter what screen of it is shown. The “posts” and “pages” links open Posts → All Posts or Pages → All Pages but not Dashboard → Home. Unfortunately that’s not what I was talking about.

If I click the “posts” or “pages” links, it would still need another click on Dashboard → Home after that to open the screen I was talking about.

    Cheers

  • No, we’re talking about exactly the same thing. Which is why I closed with this caveat:

No, it doesn’t send you to the main Dashboard page, but it does get you into the backend of your site directly.

  • So, yes, I understand that the posts/pages likes are not the same. But I figured that it might be better than nothing if someone was not aware of it.

I am still looking into the situation.

Thanks for continuing to look into this.

I have ZERO need at all for these links on that My Blog’s page:
Posts Pages Stats Sharing Change Theme Customize

Just one link to the Admin page of each of my blogs would be fine – thanks.

This whole (self censored curse word) Reader situation is beginning to resemble a make work project. :(

  • Unknown's avatar

I also would like the link back to admin home. It is really annoying having to click into posts then into dashboard home. Why did this change? Just like the reader changes it appears to have been designed by an idiot with the sole purpose of causing annoyance.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Why did this change?

I have the very sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that this Reade- My-blogs – Freshly … etc. area at http://wordpress.com they have turned into a make work project area (ie. an area that never existed previously and that i have no use for) may be destined to replace the dashboard we have now at http://name_of_blog/wp-admin/

If that sick feeling is is correct then the sooner we are told that – the better – self hosting is beginning to look very attractive to me again, despite the fact I moved a blog back here.

I agree with the general thread (My Blogs page needs simplification), and want to emphasize the blavatar problem. All of my blogs except one are private, and all the blavatars I selected, uploaded, and cropped through WordPress (which was not a snap) are not displaying in the My Blogs list. Since some of these are mine and some are group blogs I tend to ID them by blavatar when I’m moving fast. Please bring back the blavatars for private blogs.

Also, along the lines of simplification, I’d like to reiterate a request for the ability to log in and go directly to the (straightforward) My Blogs page. I don’t use Reader and I don’t appreciate that accusatory “looks like you’re not reading anything!” reminder _every time I log in_. No, I’m not reading: I’m here to write. So please make it easier for me to do that.

I considered self hosting a year or so back but then WP became stable and the reader was excellent so I decided to stay. Now however I think it is time to reconsider especially if they keep rolling out untested and downright nasty ‘enhancements’.

    Hi Josh,

No, we’re talking about exactly the same thing. Which is why I closed with this caveat

I have to admit I totally misunderstood your caveat. I wrongly assumed your “No, it doesn’t send you to the main Dashboard page” as a disagreement with my statement it wouldn’t be possible to open the Dashboard of our blogs from the My Blogs page. In retrospect I can’t explain the misunderstanding or what I was reading. All I can say is, you’re right and I’m sorry. :)

I have to agree with timethief about the usefulness of the current links. Why would I constantly have to access the Sharing settings or want to customize the theme and look of my blog? I guess these settings if at all will be changed only once or twice in a year. The stats link is redundant as well, as you can access these with the stats tab on the homepage at http://de.wordpress.com/my-stats/.

A link to the dashboard , the pending drafts and pages or Omnisearch would make more sense to me.

    Cheers

Simply changing the “Visit Blog” button to “Admin” and having it link to the Dashboard would solve the problem for me.

And I certainly hope that the new Reader and My Blogs pages aren’t going to replace the Dashboard. Yes, the Dashboard is a little difficult to use on a mobile device, but Reader + My Blogs only has about a tenth of the functionality of the Dashboard. Everything I need to run my blog is easily available in the Dashboard. I still write my posts from the Dashboard because the various “New Post” are pretty much useful only for publishing a small amount of unformatted text.

Make the Dashboard more mobile-friendly, sure. Replace it? That’s a scary thought, given how the more recent replacements have gone–the exception being the new Stats page, which gives me more info and functionality than the old one.

  • In retrospect I can’t explain the misunderstanding or what I was reading. All I can say is, you’re right and I’m sorry. :)

Not to worry. Happens to all of us from time to time, myself included.

Yes, as ecumenicallife says, this would work for me too.

I’ve been using the dashboard from my mobile, sure it is not ideal but I like the extra functionality that it offers. I have been using the wordpress app alot and for the most part it works great. There are some small bugs but it works fine for quickly replying to urgent comments/queries and for doing basic stuff such as checking stats but I don’t write posts on my phone. Most of my posts are longer technical posts with photos and tables etc so I generally create the posts on a PC at home so I can see the whole post more easily and format it correctly. Editing the pictures is also easier on the PC.

Any news on this topic? Josh said he would “look into the situation”. I thought I’ll ask before bbPress closes this topic.

So is there any progress concerning the “My Blogs” tab?

  • I passed it along to the design team. But have not heard anything further.

  • Unknown's avatar

I hope they report back. The addressed concerns/annoyances in this topic seem reasonable.

Even if they won’t change it, they could possibly shed some light on the taken decisions. Why did they choose to have two links to the front page and none to the Dashboard? Why mshots instead of Blavatars when they don’t work with private blogs?
