The "read more" function is not working properly with the use of "blockquote"
-
I oftentimes put the “read more” tag in the middle of a blockquote. All of a sudden previously published posts have moved the end blockquote in front of the “read more” tag.
It looks like this without the spaces:
</ blockquote><!– more–>Why is this happening? Is this a technical problem with all WordPress.com blogs?
Yes, I’ve updated my browser tonight and cleared cache, etc. I’m using Firefox’s latest edition.
An example of this on this blog post: http://dandelionsalad.wordpress.com/2013/11/10/growing-harvesting-and-eating-the-jerusalem-artichoke/
The text should be in blockquotes and the “read more” should be placed after the first paragraph.
Thank you, in advance for your help with this issue.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I think it is a thing of understanding “blockquotes”.
You quote a block, an indivisible peace of something. Therefor the “more” moves to the end of this.
Mybe it is helpful to present a “summary”, a preview before the blockquote starts.
Just my thougts and a possible workaround …
-
I understand blockquotes, that is not the problem. The problem is that WordPress.com has moved the end blockquote in front of the “read more” tag. Not where I placed the end blockquote.
Yes, I’m using a workaround until this gets fixed by placing the “read more” tag before the blockquote. However, that is not what I want to do for my blog posts.
Thanks for your help, though.

It’s like in raw html I thnk: You cannot close the “outer” tag before the “inner” has been closed … And if I code an end of a paragraph before I close a <span …> the browsers interprete the end of <span …> before the end of paragraph.
To handle a “more” inside a “blockquote” must be quite difficult because they have to code two versions of source code for only one html document
-
Except that it has always worked up until today.
Something on WordPress’s end has changed.

It appears that WordPress is fixing what was a bug. The software is now following good practice for html code tags.

Thanks for responding.
Unfortunately, it looks awful on the home page with no excerpts on the posts with blockquotes, just the “read more” link and perhaps a picture.

-
Sorry but I had to click out to answer the phone. I suggest you add some teaser text at the beginning of the post and maybe a thumbnail image as well. That’s what I do on my blogs.
-
Wonder why it’s worked for the last 6 years?
And thanks for the suggestions on how to write my blog posts, but I’m the editor of the blog, not the writer.
-
-
Call it whatever you like, but it worked for 6 years for me. So, there would be no way that I would know it was a “bug”.

-
Yes, I do now that you have told me.
I’m still very disappointed in the look of my home page with previous posts with blockquotes. And there are far too many to edit each one. And of course, future posts with blockquotes will look empty on the home page.

@dandelionsalad,
Future posts won’t look empty on the homepage if you use the “more” tag as it should be used.http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/
If the More Tag is inserted after writing a post, formatting errors can occur. The issue occurs when you insert the More Tag using the visual editor, but it is actually placed within another HTML tag. As an example:Oh man, this post is messed up.<!–more–>
The above will cause the rest of the posts on your front page (or in an archive) to be formatted as bold, sometimes including your sidebar contents. Not cool. It can also make the sidebar fall to the bottom of the page. To fix the issue, just place the More Tag on the outside of any pesky closing HTML tags, like so:
Oh man, this post is messed up.<!–more–>
Make sure to go into the HTML view of the problematic post and move your More Tag to outside of any HTML tags (this includes div, strong, em, etc…).

GAK!!
The forums don’t allow showing the exact code. Please use the link

for how to make it work properly. -
I do understand how to use the “more” tag and usually place it using the HTML not the visual editor. But I’ve been using it within a blockquote of more than one paragraph for many, many years. This problem began only a few days ago.
The home page shows only the info I choose to place before the “more” tag, so if the piece begins with a blockquote, I have to place the “more” tag before it now, and the appearance of the blog post on the home page will look very sparse.
-
You can still use “blockquote” and the “more” tag. Just break it into sections so the “more” tag is on a line by itself.
<blockquote>text and pictures</blockquote> more tag here <blockquote>more text and pictures</blockquote>
