The Referrals stat – does this mean total hits or unique visitors?

    I have an adequate amateur blog, which gets moderate hits each day, but hardly anything special.

    But sometimes I notice 1 referral from, say, Google+, which soon afterwards rises to 48. Does this mean 48 unique people have found me via Google+, or perhaps just the 1 person who clicked on 48 pages during his visit?

    If the latter, how can WordPress know that a referral led to all those hits? Surely the second hit onwards there would be no “referral” as the visitor was already on my site when he clicked the second link…
