The Sela Theme

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to get my static homepage to look like the one on the example layout. I can’t figure out how to get the grid on the bottom of the static page. Any help would be super welcome. I figured out how to get the static page to work, but I want my blog posts in a grid fashion on the bottom of the page.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Have you followed the instructions under the header setting up your front page from the Sela theme page yet?

If you’ve already tried this then let me know which step you got to before getting stuck. It looks like you should just be able to drop widgets into the 3 special home page widget areas.

Woah. I hadn’t seen the theme page yet. This is day like #4 of me trying to figure out word press. There is so much to learn! Thankfully I know a little bit of HTML. I’m going to sit here and try to figure it out really quick. Thank you! I might get back with you!

Ok, so I figured out where I went wrong. Maybe you can help? What if I want my most recent blog posts to be posted down there in the three widgets? Is there a way to do that?

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s OK, it takes a little bit of getting used to but I’m sure you’ll catch on pretty quickly.

I think you can probably manage a work around if, in each homepage widget area, you include a text widget, and in the widget use the display posts shortcode. You can set the shortcode to display one post only with:

    [display-posts posts_per_page="1"]

If you scroll down that last page and look at the Arguments section you should see there’s one called offset. You can leave this out of the first widget so it shows only the most recent post, but then if you put:

    [display-posts posts_per_page="1" offset="1"]

in the second widget it should only show the next most recent post. Do the same again but with an offset of “2” in the final widget.

You can tinker with the other shortcode arguments if you want to only display excerpts (a good idea!) or include an image. Let me know how it goes.

Ok, so I figured out how to put in the ‘link’ to the ‘read more’ part of the first widget. I can’t figure out how to have the expert or the photo. Do you know if there is any way that I can take the photo from the blog post and put it on there where it changes with each new post?

    thank you for the help…

Go into your most recent posts and try adding an excerpt and see if that then shows up in the widget – I’m hoping it will but excerpts aren’t supported the same way in each theme so it’s a bit hit and miss!

As for the image, if you have a featured image then doing something like the following should work:

    [display-posts posts_per_page="1" offset="0" include_excerpt="true" image_size="thumbnail"]

Maybe seeing my blog would help? justaddcoldbrew.wordpress.com

I’m going to be working on this later this morning. Thank you so much for the help!

It still looks like you’ve got the static page selected but you’ve only added widgets to the one called second front page widget area. If you want to get your most recent three posts showing at the bottom you’ll need to follow the advice about using the shortcode I gave above and add those text widgets to the areas called first/second/third footer widget area.

Just to make sure, when you’re in the customiser you see something like this for static front page but with your page name instead of “about” and then this for your widgets.

If so just add widgets into those areas and let me know so I can check again.

Alright. I’m trying to go through your first few posts here.

    1) Arguments; what is this?
    2) I still can’t seem to get the three widgets to be on the same row. I’ve tried your short post and the sela themed recommendation.
    3) I only want these three widgets only on the homepage, not as you scroll through each post. So would I still use only the first/second/third footer?

Thank you… I feel I’m almost there; i’m on the brink of a break through of figuring it out…

    Hi Megan,

If you only want them on the front page then split them out between the first-, second- and third front page widget area, one in each in order you want them from left to right. That should split them into 3 columns.

An argument is just the extra bits in the shortcode, for example posts_per_page is an argument with a value of 1 in my example above.

Here is what I am doing:
    1) Themes > Customize > Widgets > First front page Widget Area/ Second front page Widget Area/ Third front page widget area
    2) Add widget > Add Text Widget

    Here’s where I get stuck.

You’ve mentioned a few things to put in to the text area, then the Sela theme page did too.

Which one to I use? Or do I use them all?

    1) (sela theme page: which does a full width page template, even though I just want the photo to link to the most recent posts ) <img src=”image/url/address”>

    2) from you: [display-posts posts_per_page="1" offset="0" include_excerpt="true" image_size="thumbnail"]

    3)[display-posts posts_per_page="1" offset="1"]

    4)[display-posts posts_per_page="1"]

I’ve tried putting every one alone and every one together, and they don’t work in any way that i’ve tried AND the blocks just stack…

And…. one more thing… if I want to share my blog/site on like Facebook, how do you get a photo to go to the right of the post? Mine is just a blank white square. I thought that I had uploaded an icon and a logo…

  • Unknown's avatar

Here’s a screenshot of how it looks in the front page widget areas on my test site.

Here’s how each of the widget areas is set up so you can see exactly what I’ve done: first, second, third. The only actual difference is the value I use for offset in the shortcode.

Only the first post in my example has a featured image, so that’s the reason you’re only seeing one picture.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

I wasn’t doing the right #’s in the coding.

    :)

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m glad we finally got it sorted, it looks great!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks :) I’m going to play with it a little bit more. Thank you so so much for your help.

I guess I have one more thing.

Any clue what I’m doing wrong for posting this online? Like how do I get a photo? I thought I had an icon set…

If you’re just sharing your homepage link (rather than a post or page with featured or inline images) then you should make sure you have your blog icon set as this will be the default image. If that’s still not working then check that it’s the right size and proportions, the Facebook thumbnail support page has some good tips to try.
