The site plugins are not updating

  I have been trying to update the plugins for the site. Every time i update the plugin, it says ‘Failed to update plugin’ and then the site goes under maintenance for 10-15 mins. I am also unable to update the wordpress version because I have to make a backup file and for that I need the plugin which does not install
