The Spamming of Comments on My Blog by Akismet

  • Unknown's avatar

I have received over 240 comments on my blog that have been spammed by Akismet before I had a chance to read them to determine if the contents were really inappropriate. I cannot see these comments, but I’ve received 102 of them just this month. I am able to see a few comments that have gone to my spam folder, but where are the 240+ that I have not seen?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The worst of all spam contains malware and viruses etc. that could bring down many blogs if opened so it’s not sent to us. Moreover, Akismet is very accurate. You can view what is sent to spam here > http://yolandamichellemartin.org/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?comment_status=spam

The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam. Spam comes in waves. There are human beings who get paid to post spam. There are robotic programs that post spam.

There is no such thing as eliminating all spam but Akismet works very well. For more information please take the time to read “5 things every blogger should know about spam” on this page Akismet: How it works http://akismet.com/how/

Aksimet is a learning engine. If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it’s spam.

On the spam that Akismet catches on it takes only seconds to click “empty spam” and you don’t even have to click “empty spam” if you don’t want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 30 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.

You can use the Bulk Edit function (check boxes on each comment) to delete less than all the spam comments or to Un-spam more than one comment at a time. Check the box at the comment then choose the proper bulk edit command.

Akismet is very accurate so trust Akismet. Set up comment moderation, if you have not already done so, because allowing anonymous commenting on your blog is like putting out the welcome mat for spammers.

This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

Thanks for your speedy response. Is there a way to find out the content of messages intercepted and spammed by Akismet and what exactly the threats are?

  • Unknown's avatar

No there isn’t an easy way to do this. Yes I can tag this thread for a Staff response. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

P.S. If you want to be able to view ALL of the comments, aside from those containing malware and viruses which are deleted by Akismet and not sent to us, then go to Settings > Discussion and enable the option “Don’t discard spam on old posts”.

I do exactly the opposite. I have that setting enabled and I also have this one below enabled too. It’s set to 14 days currently and if and when the spam gets worse or subsides then I change the number.

Automatically close comments on articles older than __ days.

I also see you have contact form. Are you aware of where to locate the feedback? http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/#feedback-management And are you referring to spam there or to spam in comments on posts and pages found here:

I am apparently already subscribed to the thread. I’d enabled the “Don’t discard spam on old posts” option under Settings shortly before resorting to this forum. I wasn’t and I’m not sure if that option not being checked previously is/was the problem because I’ve frequently checked for comments on my posts under the latter link that you’ve posted here and have never seen nearly as many as have been spammed by Akismet (a total of 246, including 1 “false positive”) as reported by “Akismet Stats.” Thanks again for your replies, and I’ll follow up with WordPress on the matter after the holidays.

And yes, I do know where to retrieve feedback from the contact form. Thanks again for everything.

  • Hi Yolanda – You can review your spammed comments here, as Timethief pointed out:
    https://yolandamichellemartin.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?comment_status=spam

That folder is automatically emptied every 30 days, which is likely why you don’t see the full 200+ comments in there.
