The Twenty Sixteen Theme – Can I hide column to right of post

  I’m a newbie to WordPress. I chose the Twenty Sixteen Theme: it looks great and it hasn’t been difficult to use it produce a 3 page website for the sale of my cottage but I was wondering if it may be possible/allowed to remove the column of links to the right of the post about comments etc. If it is possible how do I go about it? Even if it’s possible/allowed are there good reasons to leave it as it is?

  You don’t need to use CSS to do this in your theme. You should just be able to delete the widgets from the sidebar and it will automatically switch to a full-width version.
