The Typepad-WP Migration Challenge!
-
The greater flexibility of WP.com vs. my old (almost 3 years, 47 posts) Typepad blog has compelled me to take on the onerous task of migrating all my old blog content to my new WP.com blog, “dcwinebrewadvisor” come this long weekend.
While on the surface this looks like a simple import/export process from Typepad into WP.com, the devil is in the details, esp in being able to bring over data intact.
Other challenges are that even with both a premium Typepad and WP.com subscription, permalinks (and associated Google “juice”) and comments will likely be broken, and my images (only about 60), while transferring, will continue to point back and depend upon Typepad
In any event, I have little social media exposure, comments or Google search presence with my old blog, so I think the migration will be worth it, even if some broken links in the process.
Appreciate feedback on my migration plan below:
1. Save a digital and/or paper copy of all Typepad articles (from the 1 blog of 4 Typepad blogs to be exported – I am retaining my other 2 work-related Typepad blogs “as is” in Typepad), in case of any export/import problem.
2. Configure my new WP blog with its own stand-alone domain name, “dcwinebrewadvisor” (a free option with premium WP.com account), and complete other edits and posts to get my new blog fully launched in public on the Web (so far it is private). Prior to going public, I plan to get feedback on the blog design by enabling access and comments from a few colleagues.
3. Buy for $49 software at tp2wp.com to convert Typepad txt files to WP .xml files. This company claims that Typepad permalinks, images, comments etc are all preserved in the migration. The feedback on tp2wp.com from a few bloggers on the Web is very positive. Hopefully, my posts will also migrate properly into my Hemingway Rewritten WP theme chronological order.
4. I may use my other, free experimental WP.com blog (“dmvwordpressoptions”) to run a test transfer of another little used Typepad blog to WP (at least up until the free Preview mode stage)
5. Implement Typepad Export, and then WP.com Import, as per instructions on both their sites. However, tp2wp.com and its .xml file creation is an intermediary point (even offering a Preview prior to commiting migration) in this process.
6. Check thru all migrated posts into my WP.com site to correct any errors, broken links, tagging, etc.
7. Post any help tickets, as need, to either Typepad or WP.com to correct migration glitches.
8. Fully publicize my new WP.com blog by connecting to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., as well as selected posts or comments on other blogs in my field.
9. Retain 2 work-related blogs on a free version of my Typepad blog account, but end my paid premium Typepad account for up to 4 blogs. Also, delete my old blog from my Typepad Account, the “Delmarva Winery and Brewery Journal.”
However, I understand that Typepad allows no redirects to the new WP.com blog. With luck, tp2wp.com will correct this redirect issue. If not, while I could leave behind a Redirect announcement on a stump page on Typepad for the old blog, my sense is there was not enough past Google Search activity to warrant it.
Any feedback on this plan welcome!
Gary
