Theme advice for Baskerville 2

  • Unknown's avatar

I am using Baskerville 2 for a student publication in my Communications class https://riptidesimonsrock.wordpress.com/

We have a few problems we can’t resolve.

    1. The theme automatically pulls whatever the first few words of the post are, even if they are picture captions. How to have control over what is posted on the homepage excerpts?

    2. How to do embedded photo captions?

    3. We can’t get the sidebar widget menu to show up on the homepage. This is frustrating because we want people to be able to search the site by category.

I hope you can help us out!

Hi Jennifer! This can get a little lengthy so bear in mind.

    1. The theme automatically pulls whatever the first few words of the post are, even if they are picture captions. How to have control over what is posted on the homepage excerpts?

You have the option to display between a full post or an excerpt for the post under Content options. Currently, it looks like you’re on “Post excerpt” but your post did not include any excerpts.

You can either include excerpts on each post, or use More Tag feature (tip: set content options to “full post” if you’re using this feature)

    2. How to do embedded photo captions?

As clarification, can you describe where do you want to add photo captions, on the post? As far as I know, you can add captions on photos within the post. (Not featured images, though) When editing a page, if you click on an image in the Visual Editor, you’ll see a popup appear to include captions there. Here’s a sample reference – http://prntscr.com/h1n720

    3. We can’t get the sidebar widget menu to show up on the homepage. This is frustrating because we want people to be able to search the site by category.

Looking at how Baskerville 2 theme works, the home page is designed where widgets will be on the Footer widget areas.

As an alternative, I would suggest adding a new menu to list down Categories. That way, readers will be able to search the site by categories easily.

Hope this helps! Feel free and let us know if you have any difficulty along the way.

Thank you, this is so helpful! I will work with my students and see if we can make the adjustments you suggest. With the photo captions, we were trying to caption the featured image. Is that not possible?

I would like to try adding a new menu for the Categories list. Are there instructions for that somewhere?

Also, one idea we had was to shift to a static front page with each of the categories as posts that would link through to the pages that display the posts in that category. I am not entirely sure how to do this. Again, are there instructions for this?

    Thanks!

    Hi Jennifer!

Glad to hear these information can help you in some way. :)

As I understand, featured images are well… a place for you to feature an image in your post – https://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/ Some other thread has asked similar question, so I’d say stick captions to images within your post.

There’s quite a level of detail in this link for you to add a new menu for the Categories list.

You should be able to drag the Category menu to your main menu and customize it accordingly. If you have added the categories under your menu, you can check out this link on the customize page then set “A static page”. It does take some time of trial and error to design how you want it to be, however you’re free to do anything on the customize page without saving it so that you can test it out before saving it.

    Hope this helps!
