Theme advice for portfolio type theme

  • Unknown's avatar

I’d like to have a theme that supports a slider , a content area below that, and then a portfolio underneath it.

The Sketch theme looked ok, but no content area underneath.

My inspiration for design is this website: https://www.daisysimshilditch.com/

I’m just trying to figure out if I can do something like that within the wordpress.com world, or if I’ll have to switch to a wordpress.org self-hosting. I know a business upgrade would probably allow everything, but it’s a little pricey for me, although I could go premium if that makes a difference.

    Thank you!

    Hi,

Portfolio themes may be found here: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/subject:portfolio, and post slider themes are listed here: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/post-slider. The intersection of those two lists would produce a list of themes that have both of those features. Of free themes, I think Sketch may be the only one.

  • Hi there,

Sketch is the only theme specifically created for portfolios that also supports a post slider, but you can use the Portfolio Shortcode to display your projects on the front page of any theme that shows a slider on a static front page:

    Portfolio Shortcode

Just add the shortcode after your front page content when creating the front page.

Thanks, Kokkieh for the clarification! More questions:

Portfolio Shortcode: It says I’m able to sort the portfolio projects, but does it support some sort of dropdown or sorting feature for site visitors to use?

Premium upgrade: It seems you’re now allowing the woocommerce plug-in with the premium upgrade? Does this mean I can integrate a store directly into my site now? And link from the portfolio contents to a purchase page ( I’m only selling my own art)?

If I create a private test site within my site, as seems possible, can I test premium themes without upgrading? Or at least can I cancel that upgrade if it doesn’t work out for me?

And it seems google analytics does not work with anything except the business plan?

And I guess since I have a personal plan, I could actually be emailing support instead of posting here?

    Thank you.

whoops, I see I can’t use plug-ins with the premium.

The shortcode doesn’t, but you can add portfolio types and portfolio tag pages directly to a custom menu. Then visitors can access different types of projects that way.

You will need the Business Plan to use WooCommerce, but on Premium you can use the simple payments button. With that button you can set up single-product PayPal payment buttons. It might be sufficient if you don’t plan on high-volume sales. You can then combine that with a contact form for ordering purposes.

If I create a private test site within my site, as seems possible, can I test premium themes without upgrading? Or at least can I cancel that upgrade if it doesn’t work out for me?

We don’t have a way to run true sandbox or staging sites on WordPress.com, so you’ll need a completely separate private site for testing. Upgrades you buy for your main site won’t apply to the separate testing site. But you can purchase individual premium themes for testing if you want, and cancel them for a full refund within 30 days.

And I guess since I have a personal plan, I could actually be emailing support instead of posting here?

Haha, yes :D And during weekdays you can actually contact live chat support as well. We offer 24 hours live chat support on weekdays with private email support if no operators are available for all plans via the support contact form:

Thanks for the informative answers! Yet more questions:

I have difficulty getting understandable results with a theme search. For example, I search for “slider” or “featured content slider” and I get a lot of themes that at least don’t say that they have a slider. What am I doing wrong?

Is their a page somewhere that tells me what the various features I want might be called?

As far as a costume menu for the portfolio shortcode is concerned, is it possible to put a custom menu directly above the portfolio section somehow, as well as have another menu at the top of the page. Or can one recommend a theme that does this? I’m hoping for a separate menu that obviously relates to the portfolio.

  • I search for “slider” or “featured content slider” and I get a lot of themes that at least don’t say that they have a slider. What am I doing wrong?

All themes that come up under https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/post-slider should have a slider, but the slider doesn’t necessarily work the same in all of them. In the documentation the slider instructions might also be under a “Featured Content” heading rather than a heading that says “Slider”

You can find all the available filters on our developer page, yes:

    https://developer.wordpress.com/themes/theme-showcase-tags/

is it possible to put a custom menu directly above the portfolio section somehow, as well as have another menu at the top of the page.

Where menus display is determined by the theme, as menu areas are specifically programmed into the theme. The only option to display a menu other than in the theme’s assigned menu areas is by using a navigation menu widget.

The menu forms part of the site structure, and there is no way to add a menu inside a page’s content, as you’d need to do to achieve what you’re describing here.

    Hi there,

I have some similar questions about the Sketch theme.
I found the instructions for creating a portfolio and was able to follow them up to the point of creating a static front page, where it says:
” Head to Customize → Static Front page and set “Front page displays” to “A static page”.
Nowhere on any of the Customize selections OR in the Settings selection is an option displayed to set a static front page. I have gone through the links on the admin menu over a half dozen times and cannot find it.
In other themes I’ve been able to find it but for Sketch I’m at a complete loss. What am I missing?

Along the same line: I would like to set the original front page to be the portfolio page, as it shows in the demo, but it is not available in the Pages section so I can’t figure out how to make it the portfolio page – can you help me with that, too?
    I appreciate your advice!
