Theme and WP updates

Hi guys,
I’m pretty new to WP. I am about to purchase a theme, but I have a question regarding updates. If I have modified my theme making it suitable for me and the theme has a new update. Does it mean in general that the new update of the theme will probably cause a lot of bugs? And the same question goes for WP updates. How much does a WP update affect my website?
