Theme appearance is not updating

  • Unknown's avatar

(Settings: Cyanotype theme; Chrome 91; Cache cleared in Chrome; no plugins installed)

With the Customizer tool, we are unable to update background and font colors, as well as the primary menu. The desired changes appear in the preview panel, but not on the actual website after saving. (The customizer says changes are “saved”.) Instead, the website displays the default colors of the Cyanotype theme.

We have also tried to update the primary menu from the settings panel, rather than from the customizer tool. This also does not work. After “saving”, the website still does not show any primary menu. (The primary menu was showing in a previous version of the website, and we are not able to display it on the website anymore.)

On the other hand, fonts can be updated and do appear on the website, using the Cyanotype theme.

Meanwhile, it does seem that we can update the website as desired when using other themes than Cyanotype, such as the ‘Blank Canvas’ theme.

As mentioned above, we have cleared the cache in Chrome, and our website does not use any plugins.

    Hi,

With the Customizer tool, we are unable to update background and font colors

On a test site with the Cyanotype theme applied, I was able to freely choose from the various options at Customize > Colors & Backgrounds (palettes, manual, pattern), and whatever I saved was instantly applied to the visible site. If you have the premium plan or higher on your site, I’d suggest trying the free Live Chat option that is available with the plan for assistance with this issue. See How to Access Live Chat Support.

as well as the primary menu

    Try the following steps:

    1. At Customize > Menus, click on the menu you’ve chosen as your primary menu. If you’ve created a custom menu, then this action will open the menu.
    2. Scroll down to “Menu Locations,” and check the box labeled “Primary Menu,” and then save the change.

You should now see the chosen menu in the primary menu location, at the top of the header area, both in the preview at Customize and on the visible site. Let us know either here or in a Live Chat whether these steps are successful.

We have also tried to update the primary menu from the settings panel, rather than from the customizer tool. This also does not work.

I’m not sure what you’re referring to here as the “settings panel.” In the Calypso interface, menu customization is only available via Customize. In the WP-Admin interface, menu customization is available via the dashboard at Appearance (paintbrush icon) > Menus.

Hi, thanks very much for the reply.

My apologies for the confusion. By “settings panel”, we meant within the wp-admin dashboard. (In other words, updating the primary menu outside of the Customization tool does not work.)

Yes, we have tried the steps you suggested many times. Customization > Menus > Menu Locations > then selecting the appropriate menu. It works fine in preview but after saving and reloading the website, the update does not appear.

The same problem occurs when attempting to change colors (background and text) on the website. Again, the changes show up in the Customizer’s preview window but not on the actual website.

Thank you for suggesting the Live Chat option. We will try that and update you here afterwards.

Talked with a WordPress customer support representative on Live Chat.

They also tried to update the website’s background color using the Customizer and failed, then said they would contact me again via email. Within a few hours, she reached out again and said the following:

“We spoke earlier over chat regarding the issue with saving your theme settings.
I looked into this and I found out this is a bug I’ve shared this issue with the developer to take a look at it.”

I responded with thanks and asked if she knew when (or if) the bug would be fixed. Still have yet to hear back.
