  If I switch from theme A to theme B, if I decide to return to theme A will my previous configured customizations of the theme be saved, or will I need to reconfigure them?

  You’ll need to reconfigure some things, like theme specific settings, and some widgets if there is a huge difference between the available widget areas in both themes.
