theme change process not working as instructions imply

First time user here… just testing the waters with a Personal upgrade before transferring another Personal as well as a Premium and potentially future Business website to WP.com and my first experience with changing themes has been disappointing. The instructions imply that I can choose a new theme, click Try & Customize, and automatically see my current content like it would appear with the new theme and either reject it or make some changes before activating it. Specifically, I created the front page with the Stage theme, tweaking it until I liked it, then tried to change it to the Tonal theme and nothing but the name and description got transferred (the default theme content is on the rest of the page). I’ve read the instructions twice and don’t see any other step I might have missed other than something about reverting to the original theme if you want to copy anything for the new theme but that’s a lot more work than the automatic transfer of content advertised in the instructions. I have tried actually going ahead and activating the new theme and it updates nice and quick on the internet, but exactly the same as the preview with the theme’s default content below the name/description. I tried finding this problem in other posts but couldn’t locate this exact situation…

It seems like you were experimenting with the Stage theme, made some modifications, and then switched to Tonal. I want to understand the situation better, so did you save any changes you made to the Stage theme before switching, or did you exit the preview without saving?
In certain cases, some themes have specific homepage templates that are tied to that particular theme. If you customized Stage and saved those changes, the new homepage would be found in your Pages indicating it was from the Stage theme. However, if you didn’t save before switching to Tonal, it’s possible those modifications weren’t preserved.
I want to ensure I have the right details, so could you please confirm if this aligns with your experience or if there was a different process you followed while working with these themes? Once I have more information, I’ll be better equipped to assist you.

I have the same issue.
The behaviour of the software does not match the documentation. At https://wordpress.com/support/themes/changing-themes/ it states
“Click the three dots icon and select Preview & Customize:”
however in the software only ‘Demo’ is available.
