Theme customisation or upload?

  • Unknown's avatar

On my Transnational Women blog/site, I wanted to use a theme from Inkthemes – Squirrel Responsive Pro – but it looks from my Dashboard that because I am hosted on the WordPress Online site, I am not able to upload ‘custom themes’. Is that correct? If so, what is the closest theme to Squirrel which IS available on the WordPress site? I am pretty happy with Motif, I just want to do three small things about the front (static) page – (1) Move the ‘logo’ so it is level with the Header – ie so it does not take up so much space (2) alter the colour of the bar on which the main menu sits and (3) alter the colour of one of the words in the Header in order to emphasise it. These are not essential and if I can’t do them, and don’t have an alternative, I’ll stick with Motif. But if you can answer the first question ( about using Squirrel) and then if not, suggest a slightly more customizable but still minimalist theme which is similar, I will be very grateful. thanks Heather

Correct – you will not be able to upload custom themes at WordPress.com.

I can definitely help you with these Motif changes though! However, in order to make these changes, we’ll need to use the Custom Design upgrade, which is part of the Premium plans:

    http://wordpress.com/plans

Would you like to purchase that plan on transnationalwomen.com? Alternatively, I can help you find a theme that fits what you’re looking for without any customizations!

    Dear Jeremey,
thanks for that help. Yes I would be interested in upgrading to Premium for that Transnational Women blog – I have purchased Premium as you will be aware for my ‘Reflections’ blog which was just a trial one – so does this mean that a purchase ONLY applies to one blog, not to all the blogs on the whole account?
I am certainly interested however in being able to customise my Theme. I realised that as well as the three changes I have listed I also want to be able to have two or three columns UNDER the main picture on the front/static page. (ie like the Squirrel one!).
Can you tell me (a) how to upgrade to Premium for this Transnational Women blog?
and (b) if there are any themes already in the available range which would be closer to the Squirrel one than Motif?
If not, I will certainly upgrade once you let me know how to do it.
    many thanks
    Heather

So does this mean that a purchase ONLY applies to one blog, not to all the blogs on the whole account?

That is correct – the Premium bundle will only be associated with the site that it was originally purchased on, not all sites on your account.

How to upgrade to Premium for this Transnational Women blog?

You can do that from this page:

    https://wordpress.com/plans

Just click “Select Site” under the Premium bundle and select your Transitional Women blog! You should be able to start a free trial there as well.

If there are any themes already in the available range which would be closer to the Squirrel one than Motif?

Is this the Squirrel theme you’re referring to?

If so, I think these themes might be a bit closer to what you’re looking for:

    https://chronicledemo.wordpress.com/

    https://broadsheetdemo.wordpress.com/

Take a look at those demos and let me know what you think!
