Theme Display re: Block Patterns

  • Unknown's avatar

    In consideration of switching themes…

    > on themes page
    > select a theme
    > click “INFO”
    > click “Open live demo”
    > click “Try & Customize.

Now, my content is displayed within any given theme.

My present theme (Twenty Twenty-One) uses many different block patterns for individual posts within the blog.

Looking at the “Try & Customize” option, each theme I review per the blog display shows only images included within posts which are assigned as being “featured images”, but isn’t showing post images (only titles) if I applied a block pattern…

Is this truncated display resultant of the demo function, or is this display how the theme would actually appear if activated?

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Here’s a screenshot…

  • Hi there,

When you’re previewing a theme it isn’t showing the site exactly as it would appear if you had that theme activated.

So, if you want to see what your site will look like exactly, you can create a new site and copy your main site’s content there (export-import). Then you can apply any theme to that new site and see how the content “reacts” to it.

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

Starting with the Twenty Twenty-One default theme, I switched between different block editor ready themes several times, observing the follow:

    SEEDLET:
    – link color in “Image and Text” pattern block changes to dark (not legible).
    – all pattern blocks in posts display in accordance with theme width, except “Image and Paragraph”, which displays wide.
    – on home page, the assigned dark color of the “Photography” block group changes to white; therein, the white title text is then not visible.

    BLOCKBASE:
    – on blog, only posts with a featured image are showing full posts. If a pattern block was used, only the post title is displayed.
    – on home page, the assigned dark color of the “Photography” block group changes to white; therein, the white title text is then not visible.
    – in my Portfolio, the first image fails to resize correctly.
    – viewing individual posts, the tags always run off of the page at right.

    ZOOLOGIST:
    – on home page, the assigned dark color of the “Photography” block group changes to white; therein, the white title text is then not visible.
    – on blog, only posts with a featured image are showing full posts. If a pattern block was used, only the post title is displayed.
    – viewing individual posts, the tags always run off of the page at right.

    RUSSELL:
    – on home page, the assigned dark color of the “Photography” block group changes to white; therein, the white title text is then not visible.
    – on blog, only posts with a featured image are showing full posts. If a pattern block was used, only the post title is displayed. And, when “Image and Text” pattern block is selected, the link color in “Image and Text” pattern block changes to dark (not legible).
    – viewing individual posts, the tags always run off of the page at right.

    CHANGING BACK:
    – when I went back to my original Twenty Twenty-One theme, all of my footer widgets were removed (inactive), needing to be put back into place. This has been an issue when changing themes over the years, unfortunately still present.

SUMMARY: Switching between block editor ready themes should be relatively seamless, and I hope that observed inconsistencies relating to particular pattern blocks are resolved. At present, I’ll likely wait until the Twenty Twenty-Two theme is rolled out in December.

    Thank you for your time.

  • Hi there,

Because not all themes are designed in the exact same ways, it’s possible that you will find minor changes like this, especially if you switch between several themes in succession such as you have done.

Although they are all WordPress themes, they are intended to also be individualistic, and designers may prefer different approaches from others. Blocks are meant to be interoperable between themes but also adopt the style of the new theme to some extent, which can lead to changes like the ones you observed.

With that in mind we recommend using the live preview option so you can preview a new theme with your existing content and assess the changes for yourself. If you have questions about switching to a specific theme we’re happy to take a look.
