Theme does not look like demo
-
When I load the TextBook free theme, the pictures in the header, and the site layout are not available. How do I get the theme to look the way it does with the live demo?
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,
you’ll want to follow the instructions from here:
https://wordpress.com/theme/textbook/
You’ll notice that each section has its own instructions.
If you have any particular questions about it, let us know, we’ll be happy to clarify.

Thanks for the follow-up as I will use it for the site layout. However, any idea why the theme didn’t come with the image on the demo page?

Older themes do not come with the demo content although we may add it to your site manually on some occasions. What’s the address of the site you’re working on? We’ll have a look.

Hi folks,
Another factor here is that @librarycxm must have switched to Textbook from another theme. On a new site created with Textbook applied the demo header image would appear at the top of the blog page just as it does on the demo. You’d also find it in the media library, as one of the Placeholder Images, and at Customize > Header Images.

The site is: mylibraryedu.wordpress.com
So if you change your theme WordPress won’t bring the images from the updated theme? I have not had that issue before on my self-hosted site. Is it also possible that only the Pro version of textbook includes all of the features?

After a bit of tinkering I figured what happened. I deleted the imported media and along with that, the place holder pics in the media area. Now when i change themes, the layout and pics are not inserted on the front page.
How can I get mylibraryedu.wordpress.com back to the starting point as I don’t want to lose the domain name but I want to start from the beginning where I can choose different themes?
TIA,
Dan

We can completely empty the site, though I can’t entirely promise it will work out, some themes only include the demo content for newly created sites, and the emptying process cannot be undone.
If you’d like us to do that, please reply with the URL of the site to empty as a confirmation.
Otherwise, if you follow the theme’s documentation at https://wordpress.com/theme/ixion you can build the site like the demo using your own images, or images from royalty-free sources: https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-media/finding-free-images-and-other-media/

Is there a diffrence whether you empty the site or I do it? It’s easy enough for me to remove the posts, media and pages but if you try and it can get it back so I can install themes with the pics included you can go ahead and do so. I do realize you indicated that it may not work out.

Dan

staff-blorbo,
Pardon the interruption. I don’t think he wants to empty the site.
Dan,

I’m not sure that I understand correctly. So you want the place holder pics from the previous theme? Or from the theme that you started with? Emptying the site certainly will not accomplish that.
What was the theme do you want the placeholder images from? If Textbook was your original theme, then there would have been three placeholder images on the homepage/ blog page when the site was created:
- site logo — illustration of books
- header image – view of a brick building featuring a portico
- featured image on default post
There’s no guarantee that those three images will still display on the blog page after switching to another theme. It will only happen in cases where the theme that you switch to displays a site logo, header image, and the featured images of posts on the blog page by default.

A fact that you might be missing is that switching from one theme to another has no effect upon the media library. Consequently, we should not expect that images seen on the demo of a theme will appear our site after we switch to that theme.

Let me clarify the theme issue.
I created ‘libraryedu.wordpress.com’ and I uploaded some documents via the media upload function. After I decided I no longer needed them, I deleted all media and I inadvertently removed the place holder images. However, before I did this, I experimented with several themes before finally deciding I preferred the Textbook theme.
I have since created a new site and right from the beginning, I used the Textbook theme. The images in the demo site do not come installed so this is a new WordPress.com lesson I have learned. I also learned that the images that get added to the media library are dependent upon the type of WordPress site you use (blog, business, etc.). Again, new lessons learned about how WordPress.co works.
There is no reason to empty the domain for ‘libraryedu’ as it won’t help.
I’m a long-time user of a self-hosted WordPress site and things work a little differently so I was expecting them to be the same with WordPress.com. That’s obviously not the case as the Themes you download for the self-hosted site always look like the demo site (more or less depending on your customizations). I also have one existing WordPress.com site but I noticed that when I use the ‘twenty-xxx’ themes they always look like the demo. I use the Twenty-eleven theme and it works perfectly and I have never experimented with another theme beyond the ‘Twenty-xxx’ themes.
My best bet may be to create another self-hosted site.
If I have any suggestions or comments don’t hesitate to let me know. I’m pleasantly surprised and thankful that people actually responded to my questions on what is essentially a free service.
Again, don’t hesitate to provide any other technical guidance as I explore the features of WordPress.com.

I also learned that the images that get added to the media library are dependent upon the type of WordPress site you use (blog, business, etc.).
I had forgotten about that, since the type option doesn’t come up in the method that I use for creating new sites, via the “Use this Theme” button on the demo. However, even while using this method I’ve encountered some oddities regarding default images. For example, I discovered yesterday that on one relatively new theme (Stratford) that on a new site created with this theme applied only one of the seven “Placeholder” images displayed on one of the default posts is in the media library. The other six are mysteriously hidden from the media library.
I understand your initial confusion regarding the resemblance to the demo of a new WordPress.com site vs. a new self-hosted site.
