Hello – I don’t understand why I can’t edit any of the themes’ html/css files. How do I do this?

How do I do this?
It’s not possible to do this. WordPress.com is a shared environment. That means we’re all using the same php, html and css files, so if you had the power to edit the files for your site, you’d edit them for my site as well. That is the trade-off for free hosting and tech support and unlimited bandwidth. http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
You can customise the CSS only of your theme by adding your own custom CSS in the Customizer, but this is only possible if you have the Premium or Business upgrade bundle.
See here for more info on editing CSS:
