Theme for a small medical journal?
-
I am assisting a group of physicians in Nicaragua develop their first online publishing initiative. The site is an initial step in sharing their knowledge and experiences practicing medicine here in this country. It is not intended to mirror or “compete” with journals such as JAMA or the NEJM, but will share some of their features.
I have looked at a number of the premium magazine themes and am leaning towards “Modern News” mainly because it is well documented. Are there other themes I might have overlooked or that others have found work well?
Thanks in advance for your help.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

To browse some themes that may suit you see here 33 Magazine + Professional WordPress Themes https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/professional+magazine/?sort=premium&theme-search=magazine
All themes have detailed theme description pages and live demo sites. Premium themes have support docs and support forums dedicated to the theme. https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/premium-themes/

Thanks. I have spent lots of time going through the various themes and posted to see if others before me had good (or bad) experiences with specific themes.

Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme and have done any CSS editing.
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click the “activate” or the “preview” link, or type in the name of the theme you want to use when it appears.
After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.
Note that every theme will have a detailed theme description page with set up instructions and a live demo site page that you can consult. Here’s an example:

Note: Theme selection is subjective and many new bloggers waste a horrific amount of time on worrying over which theme to use rather than creating and publishing content. It is the quality of the content you publish regardless of the theme that houses it that creates a traffic flow to your blog.

You might like to try our new free magazine theme, Gazette:

…but as timethief says, it really depends on your publication’s specific needs and taste. :)
Good luck making the selection!
