Theme for Msuic & Arts Festival

We run a 16 days festival in a small town. We host a variety of events including music, film, talks, crafts , activities of all kinds around our town in a number of venues. We currently run a site in joomla which has served us well but is embedded in older joomla tech without a huge amount of support.
We are wondering about a move to WordPress and some cheap managed hosting.
We currently run a calendar and a number of views of the events categorised by event type (art, rock, folk, history) or price e.g. as we try to make as many events as we can free, there’s a free event listing. We sell (or issue for free) tickets via ticketsource (UK) and want to stay with that – because we have invested in thermal ticket printers that work with their technology including scanning of tickets etc. (any alternative selling platform would have to offer the same).
Being not for profit, small town we don’t have much cash but can probably do quite a bit ourselves (we have IT people amongst our volunteers – if not web designers).
    Anything we should look at?

That’s Music – is there an edit option in this forum?

  • Hi there! The answer to your theme question depends on whether you’re interested in running the WordPress software on your own hosting or hosting with us here on WordPress.com? You mention “cheap managed hosting” so it sounds like you might be thinking of running a self-hosted site.

You can learn here about the differences between WordPress.com and self-hosted (WordPress.org) sites:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    The $64,000 Question: WordPress.com or WordPress.org?

If you need to integrate your ticket platform directly with the site, you’d probably need to go the self-hosted site, since that’s not a platform we support here on WordPress.com, whereas perhaps there’s a plugin for self-hosted WordPress that provides some integration.

If you have more questions about self-hosted WordPress sites – plugins, theme, or anything else – please post over in the WordPress.org forums:

    https://wordpress.org/support/

You’ll need a free WordPress.org account to post – if you don’t already have one, you can register here:

If I can help with anything on the WordPress.com front, just let me know. We have a number of themes that could work well for a music and arts festival.

I don’t think we have strong feelings about any host. I noticed elsewhere that there were major hosts offering £7 per month for a managed environment [I understand that limits and controls plug ins]. As committee, we cannot assume skills we have now are with us in the future [I have 35 years in IT – but specialising in networks & OS rather than web; I could probably make a reasonable shot a managing but I might not be here next year].
Any pointers to themes would be good – most I have seen tend to be more around festivals (several solid days with events in one place) or conferences. We are series of independent events in different places linked by a theme of the festival period.

  • OK, so it sounds like you definitely want to go with a self-hosted site. Please post over in the WordPress.org forums where you can get further help, as these ones are only meant for folks here on the WordPress.com platform. If you’re still not clear what I’m referring to, have a look at the links I provided about the differences. :)

    Good luck with your project!
