Theme for Multiple Blogs?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I am looking to choose the right wordpress theme for my needs. I need to be able to set up menu headings and then be able to blog with images and text in date order under each heading (not categories).

Here is an example which has roughly what I need:

Is anyone able to recommend a suitable theme?

    Hi,

Most WordPress.com themes will allow you to display a blog page featuring images and text. On the blog page, posts (aka “blogs”) are displayed in reverse-chronological order. I’m not sure what you mean by “be able to blog with images and text in date order under each heading.” Could you clarify that?

The example site you provided has a retired theme applied. Retired themes are not available for new sites. Here’s a few themes that you might find suitable:

I need to be able to set up menu headings

A custom menu may be added to any WordPress.com theme. Typically, the primary menu location is in, or near, the header area.

Thanks for the replies, some useful input. Apologies I don’t think I explained my needs clearly enough.

I need the menu structure to have different headings with the ability to have *independent* blog entries under each menu heading.

So rather than one long running blog, I effectively need individual/independent blogs running under different menu headings.

Maybe such a thing exists or maybe this is done via assigning categories to blog postings and then assigning the categories to menu headings?

It looks like maybe Apostrophe 2 works this way? Any clarification appreciated!

    Thanks.

You’re welcome. Thanks for the more detailed explanation.

So rather than one long running blog, I effectively need individual/independent blogs running under different menu headings.

There is only one blog page allowed per WordPress.com site. What you’ve described may be accomplished as I’ve outlined below, but it doesn’t involve multiple independent blog pages.

I need the menu structure to have different headings with the ability to have *independent* blog entries under each menu heading.

Having the top-level menu items in a custom menu be links to category pages has various advantages, including the advantage that clicking on the top-level menu item will display all posts in that category in the corresponding category page. However, it’s not necessary to have links to category pages in the menu in order to achieve your goal.

Links to posts or “blog entries” may be added to a custom menu as sub-menu items under menu items (what you call “headings”) that link to nothing, or under menu items that link to static pages. How to add menu items and arrange them as sub-menus or drop-down menus under other menu items is described in the Add menu items and Organize your menu and add sub-menus / drop-down menus sections of the Custom Menus support page.

To add links to published pages to a custom menu, simply select from the Pages type in the Add Items module seen in the “Add menu items” section of the support page. To add links to published posts, just select from the Posts type in the Add Items module. Then arrange your menu items as described and illustrated in the “Organize your menu…” section.

It looks like maybe Apostrophe 2 works this way?

It may easily be modified to work this way, but it doesn’t precisely do so presently. There are sub-menu items under the “About” menu item in the primary menu of the Apostrophe 2 demo, which is a custom menu, and the top-level “About” item doesn’t link to anything, but the menu doesn’t contain any links to posts.

How to have a custom menu item link to nothing is described in the Frequently Asked Questions section of the Custom Menus support page under the question “How do I create an un-clickable parent tab for my sub-menu?”

    Hi @jennifergath,

Your intuition is correct. You can do this by making a Category a menu item. You can do this in the Customizer (https://wordpress.com/customize will get you there or select “Customize” by the Themes button on your sidebar Dashboard). Once there,

    1. Select “Menus”
    2. Select the menu you’ll use for this. By default, the top menu is called “Primary.”
    3. Here, you have full menu control. Select “+ Add Items” to begin building custom menu.
    4. Select the “Categories” carrot to expand your options
    5. You need to already have created the Categories you would like based on having written a blog post and having assigned it a custom Category. Select it and it will pop up on the visual menu in the left bar. If none appear beyond “Uncategorized,” you need to create your Categories.
    6. Click and Drag or press “Reorder” to customize the menu as you would like, even deleting the “Blog” menu item that is there by default if you don’t want it. Your page will refresh and show you a live preview as you change items.
    7. Select “Save and Publish” when finished.

    Best,
    Jesse

    @jessestu,

As I interpret it, in the OP she specified that she didn’t want the headings to be categories, saying:

I need to be able to set up menu headings and then be able to blog with images and text in date order under each heading (not categories).

That’s why I provided instructions for two alternatives to linking to category pages for the headings: 1.) linked to nothing (unclickable), and 2.) linked to static pages.

Hi @musicdoc1, I appreciate your thoughtfulness and care in working to understand how best to approach and fix this issue. I was writing my reply when you posted yours, so I didn’t see it until after I was done. I also missed that nuance you pointed out.

@jennifergath, how is your theme selection going now?

    Best,
    Jesse

I just wanted to apologise for not replying to both your helpful and detailed responses. I have had to put the task aside for a while, I will take your advice to a wordpress support session that I have associated to a course I am doing next week and go from there.
Thank you so much for your time and advice.
    Jennifer
