theme header and image sizing

    I’m new to wordpress and am having a hard time figuring it out. I have the “benevolence” theme so i can upload my own photo at the top, but i can’t get the dimensions right, it crops oddly. What dimensions does it need to be?

    Also I just did my first post and my images are tiny thumbnails. I clicked on them and choose original file size, why are they so small?

    Let’s deal with these two issues separately.
    The size for Benevolence headers is 700 pixels x 140. The procedure to follow is in this active thread on the forum http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=4270&replies=2

    When your readers click on the thumbnail I I just did VOILA! the full sized photo appears. So I don’t think you have a problem in that regard. It seems to be working very well.

    i want my images to be large right off the bat, without having to click them.

    You’re welcome. I’m glad I could be helpful. I did look at the site you gave the link to.

    Large photos are considered a bad choice for blogs the following reasons:
    (1) each page takes a long time to load;
    (2) dial-up readers pay according to the time it takes them to wait forever to have each one of your pages to upload;
    (3)thumbnail images linked to hosted originals allow readers the choice of which of the photos they want to see full size and gives them the option of clicking on the thumbnail or not – large photos mean no choice for readers – they’re in your face – each and every one of them;
    (4) your pictures can be stored free of charge off site on flickr for example, rather than taking up bandwidth on the wordpress servers;
    (5) and most people who visit blogs are “readers” – when there are lots of big pictures there’s not usually much written content (the obvious exception here is of course is photography blogs).
    Anyway, there is always the option that one could later edit and reduce the size of photos when they are no longer current.

    i’m the exception :)
    i’m a photographer and want my images to be the reason come to see the blog.

    do you know how i can make them show up big?

    thanks again :)

    The maximum width will be 450 to 500 pixels. Any larger than that will cause all kinds of problems.
