Theme Name used within WP functions

I am working on styling the Shape theme for the starting point of a theme I am putting together for a friend, and have a question which I can’t seem to answer by googling. Searching for any combination of the words “theme name in wordpress functions” have just gotten me links to articles about how to change the name of a theme, which is not my question. Haha.

Anyways, when editing the various theme files, header.php, footer.php, index, single, etc. I noticed a lot of the code has the word “shape” sprinkled throughout. Seeing as this is the original name of the theme, and I have since changed it to something more meaningful to the site I am building. However, the theme seems to function properly whether this matches the theme name, partially, fully, or not at all.

So basically, I am wondering, why is the theme name referenced by so many functions? (thinking maybe it is actually referencing the directory?), and am I wasting my time by changing it to my actual theme name?

Sorry if this has already been asked, but as stated, I had trouble actually searching for this topic and getting relevant results.

This support forum is for only blogs hosted at WordPress.com. As your question is not about a free hosted WordPress.com blog but about a self-hosted WordPress install then you need to post to the WordPress.org forums. http://wordpress.org/support/

    Sure thing.

However, wouldn’t WordPress.com users also benefit from having this question answered?

No because it has no applicability to our use of our software here and our use of it. This is a peer support forum where Volunteers answer support questions. Staff do not hang around here waiting to answer questions. I believe your answer will probably be found in the WordPress.org Codex if not answered on the WordPress.org support forum.

In other words, we can’t edit our php here anyway, so it doesn’t apply at all.

Thanks for a more courteous answer. I was unaware that WordPress.com placed this limitation upon it’s users.
