Theme possibilities, Swank example

I like the layout of http://theuglyvolvo.com/ which uses the Swank theme. Specifically, I like that the front page has a post’s title, a short intro and then […] indicating that if you want to read more you click to a separate page. Then there is a horizontal dividing line and the next post title, blurb, and so on.

How is this done? What is the […] ability called? Is it a CSS thing? Can other themes, hopefully free ones, support this style? Obviously I’m a noob and any pointers will be appreciated.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The only themes we can use on WordPress.com blogs like your blog are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/

There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:
    upload any third party themes,
    create child themes,
    create our own themes,
    edit templates,
    create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.

    Relevant support docs:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/

There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes that. WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install.

If you choose to continue to blog here at WordPress.COM note that the setting here > Settings > Reading is only for the RSS Feed summary and does not affect the posts.

If you want to display only excerpts on the front page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

Alternatively, you can switch to using a theme that automatically displays front page excerpts. This is a list of active themes on WordPress.com that use the excerpt instead of full post content. Here are the themes that do provide that feature > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-with-automatic-excerpts?replies=13#post-1396410

There was a lot of extraneous information in that reply. However, the last two paragraphs regarding the more tag and the list of themes were actual, useful answers to what I asked. Thank you. The rest of the lecture? Unneeded and unwanted and way too wordy.

If and when you devote 8 years of your life to assisting others on this support forum as I have done, and via your own experience you have come to recognize as I have done, that many require comprehensive answers then you can judge me. Until that takes place and you have something of value to share then you aren’t in a position to do so.

It doesn’t take 8 years of experience anywhere to see that you buried the real answers in paragraph 7. Good grief, get over yourself. You aren’t all that.

I didn’t waste any time wondering why anyone would go out of their way to lecture me. Rudeness rooted in ego driven ignorance and arrogance is rampant in the blogosphere these days so I ignore every smart mouthed punk who tempts me to advise them to pull their head out of their anal canal and stop breathing the methane that that’s lowering their IQ’s. No not me, I won’t rise to that temptation here or in any other thread.

    Irony is alive and well.
