Theme Rebalance: caption not left in Gutenberg
-
After using the Gutenberg editor with WP 5, I am much impressed by its capabilities and ease of use. Additionally, one of the beautiful features of the theme Rebalance is the use of captions left to the image – a nice typographic touch.
But both do not seem to get along well: inserting an image with a caption immediately places the caption below the image without the option of “alignnone” with had been the setting for captions on the left.
Is there a way to get this feature back?
TIA

Good morning :)
Thanks for the report. We also appreciate the kind words. I’ve taken a look through previous caption issues with Gutenberg.
I’m not sure that your scenario fits any of the previous reports, though. Could you tell me if this is happening with the gallery block? or single image block?

I am going to test it out on my side to see if the behavior is replicable. Please let me know which operating system and browser you’re using too. Thanks!

This is an identical behaviour on Safari and Chrome (macOS 10.14) and Firefox on Windows 10. In the classic editor with WP, I could place the image and without alignment, the caption was placed on the left side. The non-alignment option is gone with Gutenberg, however.
I added a link to a screenshot with the classic editor:

Thanks for that. Would you be willing to send a little more context in the screenshot?
Also, could you link to an article that has this working the way you like it, as well as a newer article that does not? We can try to see if we can duplicate this issue on our servers.
If the problem is with the theme itself, by the way, and not with one of the services provided by WordPress.com, the best place to find help for the theme with WordPress.org installations is here:

Hi, thanks for your response.
Here is a link to an article that was created with the classice editor:This article was written with the Gutenberg editor:
As you can see, I only recently switched to the new editor and was using the “Classic Editor” plugin before going Gutenberg a few weeks ago.

Thanks! Okay. Here’s what I’ve found:
– If I insert a classic block, then add an image and make sure it has a caption, it shows up on the left as expected
– If I use the Gutenberg image block, no luck. I’m guessing because that image block users more wrappers and what not.
Can you confirm what’s what you’re seeing as well on your own installation? As our servers are a bit different. If it is, I’ll see if I can sort out whether to file a bug with Gutenberg itself or with this theme.
-
Yes, that’s exactly the behaviour. I suppose the <div>-tag is set differently, but I did not want to mess around in the custom CSS without knowing what side effects that might cause.
-
For now I’d recommend just sticking with the classic block (so you can still use the Gutenberg editor for other things.)
I’ll also dig around and see what we can do about this bug. Cheers!

Thanks for confirming. So for now, stick with the classic block so that you can still use Gutenberg while getting the effect you want.
I’ll also dig around to find where best to file a bug request. Once we’ve figured it out, we’ll write back here.

And just as an updated, I ended up filing an issue for the theme itself. We’ll update you again when we have more information.
