Theme searching!

    Hi Everyone,

New to WordPress so if I sound abit out place, you’ll know why.

I’m interested in setting up a new blog, connected to a school magazine and have been on the hunt for a suitable design for awhile. Now, I’ve found lots of themes but nothing that really fits the mold yet – but this could change!

I have found an awesome website thats using WordPress and what looks like a modified theme: http://themoment.blogs.nytimes.com/ – It’s pretty much exactly what I was looking for in terms of layout and colour.

Does anyone know where I would be able to download a version of this? Or how hard it would be to get a similar one whipped up?

    Cheers!,
    Seano.

we can only use themes available in presentation for our wp.com blogs. if you want to use a downloaded theme, you have to download the wordpress software and set up a self-hosted blog. (we are hosted by wp.com when we use wp.com blogs.)

otherwise, if you have css knowledge you might be able to port the theme here, if you get the css upgrade…

@seanpower – That theme at the Times looks like The Journalist, available here at WordPress.com, but the Times’ version has had some extensive (and gorgeous, IMO) CSS editing. If you have CSS skills you could reproduce that look. No ads, of course!

Thanks for your answers so far.

@sulz – We do plan to run our page on our own domain, with WordPress software uploaded. Allowing us to run our own CSS page!

@ellaella – I definitely agree, the NY page design is amazing. I checked out ‘The Journalist’ theme, and whilst I don’t have the CSS skills myself to do anything that major – is it possible to hire an online coder? (Heard about them in the past).

Anyone had any past experiences with this? Any more advice would be appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Seano.

You’d be wanting the wp-pro mailing list. Anyone with a reasonable grasp of wordpress theming would be able to knock you up something similar.

This sounds to me like you are going to be downloading a new free template from http://wordpress.org and then importing the contents of your wordpress.com blog here into the new one.

If so, then you can download the original of The Journalist which was adapted to run on wordpress.com software. Here’s the link to it http://themes.wordpress.net/columns/2-columns/837/the-journalist-10/
    HTH :)

Thanks for all your help so far. I’ll go and have a look at the site timethief has suggested.

Does anyone know what the average hourly rate would be for this type of CSS work?

    Thanks again,
    Sean.
