Theme sponsorship hurting our blogs?

I’m mostly with TT on this one.
    (1) (a) Linking to the designer. I was about to say that I can’t imagine not linking to the designer, since the lack of such a link seems ungrateful and ungracious. Then I realized that I hadn’t done so for the last month or so, having removed the “credit line” at the bottom of the wp.com version of Simpla because I prefer credit to go into the sidebar. I’ve only just got round to adding a “Share the Credit” text widget to my sidebar.
    (b) Linking to wp.com. I do this, but don’t feel the obligation to do so. A wp.com uri tells readers where the blog is hosted. If you’re using domain mapping, then you’ve paid for a different uri.
(c)Linking to wp.org. Two reasons to do this. First, as a reader, I like a blog to tell me what software powers it. Second, I want to support WordPress.

    (2) and (4). What TT said.

    (3) I’m not touching this rail (not even with a 10-foot ruby pole).

I agree. I don’t mind giving a link to the designer back to their site or to wp.org or wp.com – but when advertisers pay these designers to add their link, I have a problem with that especially when the links are hidden through CSS or other means. That’s deceptive marketing. That is my concern from the start.

Agreed. That’s why I would like to see that tag over at themes.wp.net.
