theme suddenly changed, plugins gone, can’t find backups…

Suddenly, yesterday, my website was a mess on the front and back end. Our theme was gone we could no longer find our plug-ins or basic functions. I need to install a recent backup but cannot find it. No idea how this happened or what to do…
