Theme suggestion for a mostly static site needed

I am setting up a website for an organization that I volunteer with and need to create a quick and simple site. The majority of content on the site will be static information about the organization with a link in the menu going to News where blog posts about upcoming events will appear.
While I’ve got the theory behind creating pages down, I’m having an extremely hard time finding a template that doesn’t look completely blog like. Ideally, I’d like a template that is single column for content with navigation links only at the top and bottom of the page with no sidebar. I’m not sure if this is even possible here on WordPress.
I would be extremely grateful for any suggestions pointing me in the right direction. The one non-negotiable criteria here is that the template needs to be free, without any necessary upgrades or add-ons as this organization does not have the funds for that.

Go to http://theme.wordpress.com/theme/ and click on the filters link to the right of the search box, select one column and then click the “filter” button and it will bring up single column themes, and some that have that as an option under appearance > theme options in the dashboard.

Thank you for the links. I’ve read the document on using wordpress to create a static site. As of now I think I’ve settled on mystique. I’m not crazy about it but it will do for the time being. Getting the content of the site up first is more important and then I’ll go back and play with the layout and look later.
